Of interest is an original map by Dorney which attempts to reconstruct the original vegetation patterns in North Dumfries Township in Waterloo County in the 19th century. Dorney's collection of slides is particularly significant in its documentation of natural vegetation, urban impact and areas of ecological interest both locally and elsewhere and includes extensive documentation of the "mini-forest" at his home at 124 Amos Ave. in Waterloo.

A cookbook created by members of the Student Wives Club in 1964 that included recipes for meat dishes, vegetables, desserts, and odds and ends. Examples of recipes include hamburger vegetable pie, cheese salad supreme, nervous pudding, potato fudge, and pink lady punch.

The cookbook was printed with a Gestetner offset printing machine and features pink polka dot covers.

A red melton wool jacket from the University of Waterloo Faculty of Arts worn by an undergraduate student in the early 1960s. The jacket is lined with brown paisley polyester satin. The back of the jacket contains white letter patches that spell out, “UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO.” The left sleeve of the jacket includes white letter and number patches that spell out, “ARTS / 65.” Based on these number patches, it is likely the student that owned this jacket graduated from the university in 1965.

A black, white, and gold athletic tracksuit. The front left-side of the jacket has a vertical white stripe with black vinyl letter patches spelling out "WATERLOO." The tracksuit was manufactured by Darby Sportswear Co. Ltd of Paris, ON. While it is believed that this tracksuit is from the University of Waterloo, it is possible that it is associated with the Waterloo Thunderbirds, a local girls’ hockey team.

The collection includes a black leather jacket with University of Waterloo branding, likely owned by a student in the kinesiology and co-op programs, that features patches on the front, back, and sleeves displaying the university crest, motto, and program details. In addition, the collection contains a teal t-shirt from the University of Waterloo featuring characters from the Wayne's World film, which was likely worn by a first-year undergraduate student during orientation week in September 1992.

A gold two-button blazer from the University of Waterloo worn by Peter Dallas (BSc '72), an undergraduate student in one of the first kinesiology classes at the University of Waterloo. The front left side of the jacket includes a patch with the University of Waterloo name and the School of Physical Education and Recreation logo on the chest pocket. The jacket was manufactured by Sainthill-Levine Co. Ltd.

According to Peter Dallas, the blazer was ordered for students in the first kinesiology classes by Dr. Robert (Bob) Norman and Neil Widmeyer, both faculty members in the School of Physical Education and Recreation during that period.

Peter Dallas wore the blazer with pride at numerous alumni reunions and had recently celebrated his fiftieth-year anniversary in 2022.

A white jacket from the Waterloo College and Associate Faculties (also referred to as the Associate Faculties) worn by Robert Judd (BASc '63), an undergraduate student, in 1958. The front left-side of the jacket features a design printed in blue that includes the school name, “Waterloo College,” the Waterloo College coat of arms, and the Waterloo College motto “Veritas omnia vincit.” The back of the jacket features the word “Engineering” printed in blue lettering across the centre. The jacket was manufactured by Beaver Fine Outerwear.

Robert Judd arrived on campus in September 1957 and joined the second cohort of students in the newly established Associate Faculties. Judd began classes in October 1957 and adhered to a 40-hour weekly classroom schedule. Classes were held in temporary portables located in the Waterloo College parking lot. Robert Judd likely purchased the jacket in the spring of 1958 and wore it until a new grey school jacket became available around 1960. He kept this jacket for many years as an alumnus and recently celebrated his sixtieth-year anniversary in 2023.

The collection includes a gold leather jacket with University of Waterloo branding, worn by James Land (BA '72), that features patches on the front, back and sleeves displaying the university crest, motto, and program details. A handknit scarf in the university colors of black, gold, and white, which belonged to James Land, is also included. In addition, the collection contains a black leather jacket worn by Kathleen Land (BA '99), James Land's daughter, who also attended the University of Waterloo as an undergraduate student. The black leather jacket features University of Waterloo branding and patches on the front, back and sleeves displaying the university crest, motto, and program details.

A grey melton wool jacket from the University of Waterloo Faculty of Engineering worn by David Rumpel (BASc '64), an undergraduate student studying Engineering Physics. The front left-side of the jacket includes a patch with the UW initials and an Engineering banner. The back of the jacket contains gold letter patches that spell out, “UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO.” The right sleeve of the jacket includes the gold number patches, “64.”

A teal sweater designed by Professor Emeritus Peter Ponzo for the Faculty of Mathematics that features illustrations of various animals on the front representing different groups within the faculty. Included in the illustration is a penguin representing the artificial intelligence group, a flamingo representing the Computer Science Group, beavers also representing Computer Science, as well as a python and a lion although their representation is unknown. In addition, the sweater illustration includes drawings of the Math and Computer Building, the Waterloo Crest, a Waterloo Math logo, two individuals wearing pink ties and other small details such as computers, pencils, waves, graphs, a maple leaf, and more.

A yellow nylon jacket from the University of Waterloo Faculty of Science worn by an undergraduate student in the 1960s. The front left-side of the jacket includes a patch with the University of Waterloo crest and motto. The back of the jacket contains white letter patches that spell out, “UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO.” The left sleeve of the jacket contains white letter patches that spell out, “SCI.” The right sleeve of the jacket includes the white number patches, “67.” Based on these number patches, it is likely the student that owned this jacket graduated from the university in 1967.

A handknit scarf made for an undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo likely to wear to university football games. The scarf features horizontal black, gold, and white stripes and black, gold, and white fringe.

Fonds consists of materials documenting William Dendy's life and career as an architectural historian including university course notes, research material for published works, research material on the history of Canadian architecture and other research interests such as Forest Hill, Hamilton, the architects Frank Darling and William Somerville, and the Massey family. Some materials relate to Dendy's teaching activities, Toronto walking tours and consultancy projects.

Also present are articles, card files, clippings, correspondence, electronic records, ephemera, manuscripts, maps, manuscript and typescript notes, as well as photographs, negatives, and approximately 40,000 slides (including more than 17,000 images of Canadian architecture, urban space, and landscape). The slides were taken by Dendy and are each individually identified by him.

William Tutte's manuscript notebook from his time as a student at Trinity College Cambridge. Manuscript includes graphs and formulas regarding the Four colour theorem or the Four colour map theorem (considered the central problem in graph theory). Notebook includes a folder with annotations made by Tutte referring to the content and pages with his annotations divided into twelve sections.

The Rosa Breithaupt Clark Architectural Collection is the result of an endowment made by Herbert Spencer Clark in 1982 in memory of his late wife, Rosa Breithaupt Hewetson Clark, formerly of Kitchener. Included in purchases made through this endowment are exemplary treatises from the sixteenth to the twentieth century supportive of the School of Architecture's cultural history emphasis.

Awards made in 1987 and 1990 by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada under their programme supporting the development of specialized research programmes enabled the collections to grow significantly. The first grant was dedicated to the purchase of landmark titles in the history and theory of architecture. Since the discourse of architecture ultimately looks back to the Roman writer, Vitruvius, it was appropriate that the first acquisition using these funds was a rare edition of a Vitruvian treatise printed in 1536.

The second of the SSHRC grants was awarded in 1990 specifically to support the collection in an area of critical importance: architectural developments in Northern Europe and on the North American frontier which have a profound effect on architectural theory and urban development in Canada.

A third award made by SSHRC allowed the Library to purchase The Dictionary of Architecture issued by the Architectural Publication Society (1853-1892), described as a monument to nineteenth-century scholarship.

One proposed plan for a home and 1/4 acre vegetable garden called Kitchener Park, designed by Landscape Architect John H. Melady.

One register book kept by the Ontario Association of Architects for the years 1890-1899. The book lists dues paid by each member of the association as well as money received for exam fees, filing articles, student fees and more. Also includes one item of correspondence from Mills & Hutton, architects asking the secretary for information on rates for architectural work. The register was kept by William R. Gregg.

Fonds consists of material accumulated and kept by Ross Dixon relating to his entrepreneurial interests, career, and personal life, and to the philanthropic activities of Ross and Doris Dixon. The material documents some aspects of his personal interests and childhood, his early career, and his career in industrial relations at Uniroyal Canada (formerly the Dominion Rubber Company).

A significant portion of the fonds relates to the businesses he formed outside of his professional career, the Westmount Construction Company and Westmont Enterprises Limited, for the period from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. These records document trends in suburban home-building and design during that time and include a large number of architectural drawings.

The fonds is not comprehensive, lacking documentation relating to the formation and administration of the Westmount Construction Company and Westmont Enterprises Limited and containing only a small amount of material relating the other area of his entrepreneurial activities, investment and financial services.

Collection comprises two separate series of items. The first are the architectural drawings that were created for the contests for both the city of Kitchener city hall and municipal buildings. These plans were created by W.H.E. Schmalz and others. The rest of the collection comprises materials created by W.H.E. Schmalz both when he was a student and a professional architect. Includes primarily maps, architectural drawings and art work.

The William Dendy Library consists of more than 3,500 books and 2,500 periodical issues. For the most part, the collection focuses on the history of architecture, but other topics, such as music and literature, are featured as well.

Fonds consists of two binders compiled by Dr. Henry H. Crapo when he was a Trustee with the Wasemquia Charitable Trust. The binders document the Vestris Prize Competition for Choreography in 1967 and 1968, which the Wasemquia Charitable Trust helped to sponsor. Fonds documents scheduling and planning for the competition, as well as lists of competitors and judges.

Correspondence addressed to and from Henry Crapo, discussing various topics such as invitations sent to renowned ballet dancers in the New York world to judge in the competition are included, along with press releases and letters to advertisement agencies to promote the competition. Other records in the binders include clippings from newspaper and magazines advertising the competition, as well as black and white photographs depicting trophies from the competitions and scenes of performance entries.

Fonds also includes a yellow patina bronze statue that depicts a caricature of Auguste Vestris, which acted as the central theme for the Vestris Prize competition. The statue portrays Auguste Vestris with an oversized head, wings, and a garland.

Collection consists mainly of items relating to the history of Ontario, with some items relating to other parts of Canada, the United States and Europe. Includes correspondence, documents, land grants, leaflets, pamphlets, clippings, maps, photographs, etchings and ephemera.

Fonds consists of correspondence, documents, journals, and a photograph relating to Colin Rankin's activity as a Fur Trader for the Hudson's Bay Company. Included are three journals kept by Donald McKay, Fur Trader, between 1799 and 1806, which were acquired by Rankin probably during his stay in the Temiskaming district.

Correspondence from Daniel Claus to Captain Matthews. The letter is regarding the capture of Peter Hansen and his servant as members of the rebellion by the Mohawk nation to be used to gather intelligence. The letter also mentions a contract for fresh meat, and that members of the village had been unwell. At this time Claus had been appointed deputy agent of the Six Nations in Canada under Frederick Haldimand.

Five land grants from the Department of Indian Affairs granting promised Indigenous lands. The grants are made out to Benjamin Franklin Mutchmor (200 acres), Elizabeth Mutchmor (175 acres), Charles Woodward (100 acres), and Mary Rowe (100 acres). The lands granted were to be for the use of the Ojibwe and Odawa of Manitoulin Island.

Collection of reproductions of archival materials relating to the history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. The collection includes reproductions of maps, a treaty, and a record of Indigenous songs and more.

One photograph album of 91 photos from Newfoundland and Labrador, ca. 1890. The images show men and women hunting, fishing, exploring nature and visiting with Inuit communities. The photographs were taken in St. John's (showing Signal Hill, the harbour, and the city skyline), along the Humber River (at Big Falls, Steady Brook, and Bay of Islands), and in Labrador (at Nain, Cape Harrison and Hawke Harbour).

One single folded page pamphlet advertising Va-Jel germicidal jelly. Recto also has an advertisement for Va'antiseptic douche. The products claim to offer a new freedom for women and a happier life through voluntary motherhood.

One "Seduction" board game, a board game designed for two "swinging" couples. The game is complete with board, pieces and cards.

One photograph album capturing moments of gender expression in the early 20th Century. The album contains family and school photographs, and the images of gender expression centre around a group of students on what appears to be a school trip in Pennsylvania. People who appear to be assigned female at birth are shown wearing typical male clothing of the time, or dressed en homme, and people who appear to be assigned male at birth are shown wearing typical female clothing of the time, or dressed en femme. Beginning in the 1840s laws were passed across the United States criminalizing the act of appearing in public “in a dress not belonging to his or her sex" and the activities of this group of students would have still been illegal at this time. It is unclear if the people in the images are cross-dressing as a form of gender expression, entertainment or sexual fetish, or if they are transgender or gender non-conforming.

One possibly satirical consent card, stating that the woman who fills the card in is giving her permission to engage in sexual acts with the man who has given her the card. It also grants the man indemnity under the Mann Act.

Materials related to Reverend Alfred Henry Tyrer’s books and publications on birth control, sex education, and marriage life.

Includes pamphlets and order forms for Tyrer’s books Where did we come from, mother dear? (Marriage Welfare Bureau, 1939) and Sex, marriage and birth control (Marriage Welfare Bureau, 1936), and ephemera related to the books and the Marriage Welfare Bureau.
Also contains booklet Marriage welfare : some facts about birth-control by Reverend Alfred Henry Tyrer which acted as promotional material for the book Sex, marriage and birth control. Booklet includes sections: Birth-control, the population problem, definition of birth-control, birth control and war, mothers who die in child-birth, infant mortality, birth control vs. infanticide, birth-control vs. abortions, birth-control vs. degeneracy and disease, birth-control vs. prostitution, economics and birth-control, divorce, religion and birth-control, the present status of birth-control, a prairie marriage.

Materials were enclosed in an envelope sent from Ontario on July 10, 1941, and with a letter addressed to Steve E. Chorney from Ranfurly (Alberta) acting as an introduction to the publications and explaining their importance.

Collection consists of materials relating to the personal and professional life of Marie Stopes as well as to the history of birth control. Includes biographical materials, articles and ephemera related to birth control, correspondence, and ms. drafts of a biography of Stopes by Ruth Hall.

This collection, funded by grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and Kaufman Footwear of Kitchener, Ont., consists of about 400 items published between 1906 and the 1980's related to the British birth control pioneer, Dr. Marie Stopes. A collection of archival material, the Marie Stopes archive, complements the book collection.

Included are first and scarce editions of Marie Stopes' writings on contraception, her early works in the fields of botany and geology, as well as much of her literary output. First and variant editions of her best-known books, Married Love, and Wise Parenthood, both published in 1918, are also present. The collection includes first editions of Stopes' first two published works, The Study of Plant Life for Young People (London, 1906, call number F9984), and Ancient Plants (London, 1910, call number G7956).

The collection contains an extensive selection of supporting materials about contraception and family planning by other authors. Highlights include Annie Besant's pamphlet, Law of Population (London: n.d., call number F11010), early issues of the journal, Birth Control News (call number HQ763.B46x), L. Darwin's What is Eugenics (1932, call number F9966), and W. J. Robinson's Fewer and Better Babies (New York: 1934, call number F10053).

One item of correspondence addressed to Maryse Choisy by an unidentified sex worker, signed "a fan." The writer of the letter states that she has read Choisy's "Psychoanalysis of the Prostitute" and encourages her not to make the mistake of making generalizations about all sex workers. In specific, she points out that she does not consider her clients lovers and thinks of them as no more a customer than a waitress thinks of diners in a restaurant. She also states that she is engaged in sex work purely for the money. As well, the writer notes that she has a pimp and that they have a positive relationship, are married, and enjoy a healthy sex life. They met while she was already working as a sex worker, and he was already working as a pimp and had no desire to change each other's profession. She also notes that they did not sleep together until after they moved in together. The letter is ended by noting that they eventually would like to settle down, and that they are saving to open their own bar or liquor store one day.

One manuscript copy (1 vol. 347 pp.) of Euclid's elements of geometry being an abbreviation of Mr. Cunn's edition of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 11th and 12th books in which the verbal demonstrations are greatly abridged and the figures for their elucidation laid down with accuracy, so as to be proved by scale and compass, by James Horne, son of Richard Horne, First Clerk of the Admiralty. Two bookplates, one of W.R.B. Osterholt and one of Henry Buxton Forman.

One manuscript copy (1 vol. 348 pp.) of Lorenzo Mascheroni's Geometrical problems resolved by means of compasses or by the mere description of circles translated and with additions by A.B. Lousada, Devonshire, 1820. Also includes bound in original plates with diagrams.

The University of Waterloo Archives (UWA) conducted an oral history pilot project in 2022 to actively document the University’s history through the lived experiences of staff, faculty, and students. This project took place to ensure that the perspectives of the interviewees are incorporated into the archival memory.

Interviewees were selected by members of an advisory committee that was struck to ensure the project captured a cross-selection of individuals from the Waterloo community. Working with historian Dr. Anne Millar, several staff, faculty, and students were interviewed.

The interviews include discussions about the interviewees family background, their decision to come to Waterloo and the path that brought them there, as well as their thoughts about the institution and where it will be at 100 years old, in 2057.

In partnership with the Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism, the University of Waterloo Archives (UWA) conducted a series of interviews to capture the voices of Black students, faculty and staff connected to the University of Waterloo. The goal for the Black Oral Histories project was to preserve histories in a way that is familiar to Black identity and Blackness as the African diaspora has a deeply embedded oral history culture.

Interviewees were selected by members of an advisory committee that was struck to ensure the project captured a cross-selection of individuals from the Waterloo community. Working with Jermal Jones, Associate Director, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Access, Library, six people were interviewed.

• 6. Dr. Vershawn Young, an artist, actor, diversity consultant and joint appointed professor in Communications Arts and English Language and Literature at the University of Waterloo where he has been the director of Waterloo's Black Studies program since its launch in 2022

This file consists of photocopies made for K.M. McLaughlin by the National Archives of Canada and consists of documents pertaining to the Acadian Club raid and the attempt to gain restitution from the government. The file contains copies of letters by N.A. Zick, President of the Acadian Club, W.G. Weichel, M.P., Sir Sam Hughes, Minister of Militia and Defence, and others, as well as a memorandum of damage done and recommendation of the Court of Inquiry. It also contains 2 photocopied chapters from Ontario and the First World War, 1914-1918: a collection of documents.

Material relating to the life, career, activities and interests of Alice Riggs Hunt. Includes correspondence, manuscripts, printed material, clippings, diaries and memorabilia. Correspondents include E. Sylvia Pankhurst, Carrie Chapman Catt, Jane Addams, and Romain Rolland.

Fonds consists of materials relating to the personal and professional lives and interests of Alida and George Burrett. Contains materials relating to Alida's interests in women's rights and the environment, and her work with the Kitchener-Waterloo Status of Women Group. Also contains materials relating to the couple's shared interest in nuclear disarmament and George's work with the Waterloo Region Peace Network. Includes clippings, ephemera, financial records, meeting minutes, correspondence, etc.
