He writes frequently about the food at the camp and the availability and quality of items such as cigarettes, chocolate, shaving soap, socks, stationary, and other personal items; he requests various items to be sent from home. He also writes about his social life, including outings to town, dates with women, movies, night clubs, and restaurants, as well as dances and dinners at the army camp. Smart shares with his mother his thoughts and feelings about girlfriends at home and the women he dates in Europe. He becomes particularly close with a woman from Salisbury named Elise who is engaged to another Canadian; they spend much time together and remain friends after she is married and has a child. Descriptions of his travels to places such as London and Edinburgh while on furlough are also significant.

Smart also responds to news from home and comments on the activities of family and friends in the Grassie community. He inquires about the farm work at home (much of which appears to be done by his sister) and describes farming practices he sees in England. He also comments from time to time on the role of women in the army and in society, Christianity in the army, and the general progress of and reasons behind the war.

The collection consists of 350 titles from the personal library of the philosopher and man of letters, George Santayana (1863-1952). The subject focus of this portion of Santayana's library, purchased by the University of Waterloo Library during the 1960's, could be characterized as interdisciplinary, with works in philosophy, literature, religion, and history. Many of the books were presented to Santayana by their authors. The collection is supplemented by reference and critical materials related to the life and work of Santayana as well as editions of Santayana's own writings. First or early editions of most of Santayana's works are included.

One of the most interesting and significant features of the Library of George Santayana is that many of the books from his personal library contain annotations in his own handwriting. These notes reveal his opinions and thoughts about the writings of others. The collection includes Santayana's own copies of his three-volume autobiography, with his corrections and notes to his publisher.

One autograph album signed by former members of the Poets Club on the occasion of club's twenty-fifth anniversary. The book is full Morocco leather with raised spine bands.

Collected by Gustav Seide, this collection includes primarily works by 19th century German mystic Jakob Lorber and his circle such as Gottfried Mayerhofer. Broadside condemning Elizabeth Cady Stanton's "The Woman's Bible" and the fight for women's suffrage. Published in 1895, Woman's Bible discusses Stanton's views that Christianity and masculine theology were some of the leading factors in keeping women from gaining rights. Although highly criticized both before and during its publication, Woman's Bible was a bestseller and was reprinted twice in the year after its publication. The broadside here was printed approximately 25 years after the publication of Woman's Bible, likely during the time that the debate on the ratification of the 19th amendment to the US Constitution was underway.

The broadside excerpts passages from Stanton's work in an attempt to prove that fears around women's suffrage leaders are founded. The unknown author also implicates suffrage leaders Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Stone Blackwell, even though neither had a hand in the publication of The Woman's Bible.

Anonymous open letter created by a group of feminists from Québec outlining the outcomes from the October Crisis (Québec, October 1970) and the relationship between Québécois feminist movements and the Front de Libération du Québec (FLQ).

Letter begins by explaining the relationship between the FLQ struggle and women’s struggle. It then moves to an overview of the events that lead to the October Crisis and the invocation of the War Measures Act, while calling for an independent Québec. Later, it covers the effects of the October Crisis for the citizens of Québec in general, and for women in particular (retelling raids, questionings, jailing, and overall police activities and attitudes). It continues with an exposition on women's inequality in government and society. The letter finishes by appealing for support to the FLQ and the women’s movement.

Letter seems to have been written shortly after the invocation of the War Measures Act in October 1970, and a year after the Women’s Movement in Québec began (possibly refers to the Québec Women’s Liberation Front (FLF) created on December 1, 1969).

Photograph album compiled by Mabel E. Neiley during her time working as a nurse in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. Album reflects the life of a Canadian woman who emigrated to the United States in the early 20th Century and worked in the medical profession during the First World War and the 1918 Influenza pandemic.

Album includes photographs and postcards featuring photographs of the experiences of Mabel E. Neiley during her time as a U.S. Army nurse. Photographs capture nurses in uniform at the hospitals and barracks, nurses taking care of patients, nurses socializing with each other and with soldiers, and nursing posing in different areas of the hospital facilities. Album also contains photographs of soldiers by themselves and official visits (including one of possibly Edith and Woodrow Wilson).

According to annotations in some photographs, images were taken at Walter Reed hospital (Washinton DC, U.S.A), Camp Gordon (Georgia, U.S.A), and Columbus Barracks (Ohio, U.S.A).

A sound recording of an interview conducted by Dr. Anne Millar with Camille Huo, a student in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Waterloo, for the Oral History Hub pilot project. The interview includes discussions about Huo's family background, their decision to come to Waterloo and the path that brought them here, as well as their thoughts about the institution and where it will be at 100 years old, in 2057. Accounts of the German Baptist Church from 1894-1923. The volume contains lists of members, including many familiar local names, and statements of accounts. It also contains documents relating to the Benton St. Baptist Church, including annual reports and financial statements ca. 1919-1930.

Like many other Kitchener natives, E.B. Dunke seems to have purchased land in Saskatchewan, documented by one file of correspondence.

Edwin Dunke was probably the proprietor, or part owner, of Dunke and Co., a grocery store at 35 King. St. E. between Queen and Benton Streets. The "day books" of this store, complete with customers' names, purchases and store inventories reveal the daily lives, diets and purchasing patterns of local families and individuals from 1896 to 1930.

Manuscripts collected by Dona Massel by members of the Kitchener-Waterloo community. Massel taught creative writing courses and was involved in interviewing people about their experiences in the Second World War.

One theatre contract between Asa Steele and Robert B. Mantell for Asa to work beginning on August 31, 1896. Robert agrees to pay Asa $50 per week for her services at a theatre, opera house, or hall. The contact outlines the expectations for both parties as well as rules and regulations for the actor and how their pay may be docked if they break them.

One bound manuscript volume of sermons by Reverend Joseph Irons for the year 1828. The book appears to have been written by his son William Josiah Irons (note on p. 26 reads taken by W.J.I.)

Collection consists of ephemera relating to the Presbyterian Canadian Girls in Training program. Includes song and lyric sheets, programs from the 1970 vesper service, notes on overcoming denominational difference in CGIT, a booklet by Marilyn Kalbfleisch on Christian living and a brochure for the 1967 New Hamburg relief sale.

One volume of household accounts, 1911-1919, kept by an unidentified female, probably from the Port Elgin, Ontario area.

Consists of one print of Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire, as seen from across the River Wye. Two men in a boat can be seen fishing on the river in the foreground. The print was published October 1784 by S. [Samuel] Hooper. The Abbey is referenced by Wordsworth in a poem and was used as inspiration for other poets and painters.

Material documenting Luella Creighton's student days at Victoria College, University of Toronto, 1924-1926. Her personal life is further documented through a series of diaries, 1963-1990. Most of the textual material in the fonds, however, relates to her career as a writer of both fiction and non-fiction, and consists of correspondence with her publishers and readers, reviews, manuscripts and typescripts of both published and unpublished works.

The Breithaupt Hewetson Clark collection includes family papers the three families named; the Breithaupt family, the Hewetson family, and the Clark family. Made up of over several hundred cubic feet of archives, about 12,000 photographs, several thousand printed items and a large group of "subject and topical files" as well as plans, maps and drawings.

The largest set of family records are those related to the Breithaupt family of what is today Kitchener with the earliest documents being from the period of Liborious Breithaupt's emigration in 1843. A small group of family papers collected by Spencer Clark contains material on the Clark and Alexander families. Other families including the Devitt family of Waterloo and the Davis family of Brampton are also represented in the collection.

Also in the collection are records related to the Guild of All Arts (now the Guild Inn) in Scarborough, Ontario from its inception in 1932 to the 1980s. Founded by Rosa Breithaupt Hewetson Clark and Spencer Clark, the Guild began as a co-operative crafts community, and evolved primarily as a hotel and conference centre. In addition to Guild records, the Breithaupt Hewetson Clark collection holds smaller collections acquired by the Breithaupt family and by Spencer Clark. The personal library of Spencer Clark, which includes many books, periodicals, government documents, and ephemeral items, was donated together with the archival collections, and is particularly strong in the fields of urban planning, architecture, and Canadian art.

Materials include family papers from three families, the Breithaupt family, the Hewetson family, and the Clark family; records from the Guild of All Arts in Scarborough, Ontario, founded by Rosa Breithaupt Hewetson Clark and Spencer Clark; and several smaller collections acquired by the Breithaupt family and by Spencer Clark. Typescript letter regarding lumbering on Lake Huron, Ontario written by David M. Netterfield. The letter describes the history of the Spanish River Lumber Company that operated near the Sauble River, between 1882 and the 1940's, focusing on the 20th century history of the company. Account makes reference to the Spanish River Indian Reserve, Wahnapitae, Ontario, the Great Lakes Storm of 1913 and the Mississauga Timber Reserve. Also included is a business card dated July 14, 1958, for Noranda Mines Limited located in Toronto, Ontario with a handwritten note that reads: Thought this might interest you. Hope you had a good trip. Hank. 14 July/58."

Contains of a single holograph letter, dated April 17, 1878, written by Sir John William Dawson to an unidentified recipient about the conflict between science and religion.

Fonds consists of correspondence to Lester Paige Breckenridge from Anson Stokes, William H. Taft, A.T. Hadley and Hiram Bingham, dating from 1912 to 1921. Three of the letters have a Yale University header and are addressed to Breckenridge in New Haven, Connecticut.

Southey's version of nursery rhyme, presented as a holograph poem in a letter to his brother, Captain Thomas Southey, St. Helen's, Auckland, New Zealand. Signed with Southey's initials.

Collection consists of a corrected carbon typescript of a review article. The article, written by Acorn Milton, discusses the writings of Al Purdy and Irving Layton, as well as the use of poetics in writing.

Collection contains two poems. The first is a holograph poem, titled "Acceptance", which was written a short time before the death of Padraig O Broin and later published in Folio magazine. The second is a typed poem titled "Paraphrases from the Irish - James Stephens".
