One item of correspondence from Charles Gaston Smith Jr. of the Harvard Club of Boston to Eleanor Hallowell Abbott. The letter is dated July 25, 1924 and in it Smith asks Coburn if she knows of any girls in real life that are of the same quality as those in her books.

Material documenting Luella Creighton's student days at Victoria College, University of Toronto, 1924-1926. Her personal life is further documented through a series of diaries, 1963-1990. Most of the textual material in the fonds, however, relates to her career as a writer of both fiction and non-fiction, and consists of correspondence with her publishers and readers, reviews, manuscripts and typescripts of both published and unpublished works.

This collection, donated to the University of Waterloo in 1988 by the family of the late Rosa Breithaupt Hewetson Clark and Spencer Clark, includes family papers from three families, the Breithaupt family, the Hewetson family, and the Clark family; records from the Guild of All Arts in Scarborough, Ontario, founded by Rosa Breithaupt Hewetson Clark and Spencer Clark; and several smaller collections acquired by the Breithaupt family and by Spencer Clark. Also includes two audio cassettes featuring a recording of the salute to Joseph Orr Connell on his retirement from the YMCA in May 1976 and one audio cassette containing a recording of remarks given by Charles Greb at the opening of a new Waterloo Family YMCA on June 10, 1971.

The materials in this collection were assembled by Seagram Museum staff from a number of sources and reflect the museum's focus on the beverage alcohol industry in the North American context. The album is made with wooden boards which feature paintings of a sunset over water and a song sparrow with calligraphic poetry. Each page includes a photograph of a different woman surrounded by a hand drawn frame that speaks to her life and work. Women in the album include Florence Nightingale, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, Lady Florence Baker, Mary Somerville, Emily Davies, Johanna Maria Lind, and Rosa Bonheur.

The fonds consists of material relating to the history and operation of the Westmount Golf and Country Club in Kitchener, Ont. from its beginnings in 1929-1930 to 2000. Original documents include Board of Directors and other committee minutes, financial statements, tournament planning files, publications and ephemera as well as photographs and slides. The bulk of the fonds consists of manuscripts and other material gathered and prepared in for the publication of a 50th Anniversary history, Westmount Golf and Country Club, published in 1981.

The fonds contains biographical information such as clippings, interviews and awards, scrapbooks maintained by A.R. Kaufman relating to birth control, photographs, and autobiographical accounts by A.R. Kaufman of trips taken to England and France in 1929, around the world in 1958, and to Russia in 1963. It also includes material about Jacob and Mary Kaufman in the form of clippings, biographical accounts written by A.R. Kaufman, correspondence and other material relating to their estates and photographs.

Accrual consists of materials created and accumulated by the Kaufman family, including materials created during their personal and professional lives and by Kaufman Rubber and Footwear. Collection consists of 82 plans of gravel pits in Ontario. The plans have been collected by Wayne Caston, and he was involved in consulting in many of the projects. The records in this finding aid consist of information taken from an Excel spreadsheet created by Caston with details on each of the plans. A printout of the spreadsheet is also present in the collection. Plans are listed in the order originally provided by the donor on the spreadsheet.

The B.P. Nichol Library of Science Fiction, acquired in 1990, consists of more than 500 science fiction titles from the private library of the late Canadian writer, B.P. Nichol (commonly referred to as bpNichol).

Many well-known science fiction authors' first works were issued only in paperback, and this collection includes many key titles in the science fiction genre which are extremely scarce today as a result of the vulnerability of the paperback format to deterioration. The books in this collection feature many striking examples of cover art.

One handwritten letter from Robert Southey addressed to a William Webb of Dublin. The letter was sent from Keswick and is dated November 8, 1826. Also includes an etching of Southey.

Two sets of minutes from the St. Jacob's Literary and Debating Society. The minutes include lists of members, as well as debate topics and outcomes. Debate topics include work life, the railway, social services, roles of men and women, annexing Canada to the United States, and more.

Materials created and accumulated by Harry Huehnergard including an aerial photograph of the Uniroyal Chemical plant in Elmira and an edition of the Kitchener-Waterloo Record with a front-page article about Harry published on the occasion of his retirement.

Two scrapbooks, the first compiled by Damaris Smith containing clippings, engravings, stamps and seals, obituaries and biographies of prominent suffragists, literary, political and social women, some British. The second, compiled by her daughter Gertrude, contains an article written by Damaris Smith entitled "Pioneer Wife". As well, it documents the history of the Smith family and contains photographs and a pencil sketch of the "Mountain Hall" homestead.

The Private Press book collection includes items from more than 1,000 presses in Canada, Great Britain, and the United States. This collection has been developed as a representative collection, with intensive coverage of selected presses, such as Hague & Gill, St. Dominic's Press, Nonesuch Press, and Golden Cockerel Press, to provide scope for in-depth study of the history and development of these particular presses. A sample selection from a wide range of other private presses gives an overview of the private press movement in the twentieth century.

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by John Gartshore Martin and other members of his family, primarily his mother Jessie Martin and father John Alexander. Records relate to the lives and activities of John Gartshore Martin and other family members, including the impact of World War II. Includes photographs, correspondence, clippings, war memorabilia, ephemera, certificates, a scrapbook, military decorations, and other material.

Collection comprises two separate series of items. The first are the architectural drawings that were created for the contests for the both the city of Kitchener city hall and municipal buildings. These plans were created by W.H.E. Schmalz and others. The rest of the collection comprises materials created by W.H.E. Schmalz both when he was a student and a professional architect. Includes primarily maps, architectural drawings and art work.

Margaret Schreiter was "Camp Mother" at Camp Tinawatawa on Paradise Lake near Waterloo, Ontario between 1952 and 1959. The materials contained in this fonds include reports, the texts of presentations given by Margaret Schreiter, the outline of a discussion at a camp counsellors meeting led by Margaret Schreiter, correspondence, an ms. list, and a camp newspaper. These items help document Y.W.C.A. camping activities at the time.

The research collection maintained by the Coalition during its 10-year existence consists of approximately 350 books and periodicals, ranging from government reports to ephemeral publications.

Typescript lectures given during séances held under the supervision of medium Thomas Lacey in Waterloo, Kitchener, and Hamilton from 1934 to 1951. Some lectures and a press clipping featuring a letter to the editor against capital punishment written by Thomas Lacey are contained within a scrapbook. Lectures range from various topics including life and death, peace, Gandhi, and spiritualism.

The Sofie Gauthier collection contains records created and accumulated by Sofie Gauthier relating to Spiritualism. Records include lectures on Spiritualist practices, automatic writing, a newsletter from the National Spiritualist Association of Churches, and an OAHSPE bible.

Two Nazi propaganda albums with tipped in maps, portraits and images. Also included in each album are 100 stereoscope photographs and a stereoscope viewer showing Nazi activities during the Second World War.

One photograph album kept by a member of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers documenting a Canadian west coast trip through the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. The 120 silver gelatin photographs show images of interest to the engineers including elevators, irrigation works, mines, smelting works and power plants as well as the scenery of the Rocky Mountains and local people and wildlife. Of particular note is the fact that the party contained numerous women, not all of whom were wives. The front of the album has a pastedown listing all participants in the tour and the back a pastedown listing captions for all of the images.

A collection of seven zines created by Jenna Rose Sands on topics including cultural appropriation, residential schools, missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, Pow Wow etiquette and the 60s scoop. Much of the artwork is hand-drawn and includes collage work.

Fonds consists of materials from many generations of the Bray family. Includes 26 items of correspondence sent to Abraham Bray, the first Bray family member to settle in Canada, as well as 19 diaries kept by later generations of the Bray family. Includes 18 diaries kept by (George) Murray Bray from the years 1929-1949 as well as one trip diary kept by his mother Florence Murray Bray detailing a variety of trips from 1892-1950.

More than 2 million negatives taken between 1938 and 2001 by staff photographers at the Kitchener-Waterloo Record (KWR) and its predecessors. Providing a historical look at the Region of Waterloo, the Collection includes documentary photographs of local news events, community activities, regional development, human-interest stories, businesses, schools, and sports teams. Portraits of business and community leaders, as well as commissioned photos taken for advertising purposes, are part of the Collection. It also includes scrapbooks containing clippings and pictures that appeared in the paper from 1971 to 1995.

Materials relating to the personal and professional life of the Motz family spanning over one hundred and fifty years and four generations. Also included is materials relating to their family work in the newspaper industry in Kitchener. Includes personal records of John Motz, his son William John, and his grandchildren John George and John Edward as well as their respective wives. Fonds consists of materials relating to the life and career of Jerzy Pindera, with a specific focus on his time in World War II and as a prisoner of war in Sachsenhausen concentration camp during the Holocaust. Includes correspondence, articles, war records and short stories, as well as tapes of interviews conducted with Pindera.

Fonds primarily focuses on Jo Davis' work as co-founder, vice-president, etc., of the Canadian women's group known as the "Voice of Women". Davis was actively involved from 1960 to 1963. The group still exists but Davis is no longer involved.

Included here are correspondence, memos, briefs, speeches and clippings which document the change in focus of the group from its early years--a change which ultimately resulted in Davis' resignation (January 22, 1963). Included on many folders or individual pieces of correspondence are Davis' notes, done in 1990, which reveal a unique perspective of early events.

The fonds also contains groups of papers documenting Davis' interests prior to her work with the Voice of Women (World Refugee Year), projects concomitant with VOW activities (Canadian Peace Research Institute and lnternational Cooperation Year) and projects subsequent to VOW activities (Harold King Farm and French Week). Small amounts of materials relate to Davis' current interests such as The Turnaround Decade Group.

Consists of Marion Conroy's copies of material given to delegates at the National Conference of Regional Chairmen, Consumer Branch, Wartime Prices and Trade Board held in 1944, and includes the agenda and outline of issues for the Conference, as well as a separate report submitted by Kate Aitken, Supervisor of the Conservation Programme, on the establishment and progress across Canada of "Remake Centres." These centres were for teaching women to conserve new yard goods by making over existing garments.

The fonds also contains a scrapbook kept by Marion Conroy of clippings and ephemera dating from 1941-1944. As well as documenting Marion Conroy's activities, the scrapbook contains information on the organization and personalities involved in the Board and the Consumer Branch, such Donald Gordon and Byrne Hope Sanders. Also present are news accounts of the many rules and regulations applied to all aspects of the production and consumption of consumer goods, from fashion, food and drink, and housing, to the delivery and return of purchased goods.

Fonds consists of negatives and proof prints taken by Robert T.G. Nicol under the name of Personal Studio between 1946 and 1996. Studio, home portraits and candid photography of families and weddings, as well as commercial jobs for many local industries and businesses document comprehensively the growth and changes in the way of life in the Waterloo Region in the post-war era. Many nationally important companies employed Nicol, some as their "house photographer": these include B.F. Goodrich, Budd Automotive, Mutual Life Insurance Co., Bell Telephone, Electrohome, Raytheon, IBM, and Greb Shoes. Many types of businesses are represented: storefronts and interiors of banks, clothing, department, music, furniture and grocery stores, dairies, factories, restaurants, hotels and motels, churches, service stations, car dealerships, service industries, construction trades, and more.

Materials created or accumulated by Julia McCarthy during her professional and personal life. Includes journals and personal correspondence received by McCarthy, drafts of poems and anthologies, professional correspondence related to the publication of McCarthy's work, correspondence related to applications for grants and awards, awards received by McCarthy, interviews and articles about McCarthy, and work by and about other authors accumulated by McCarthy.

A gold blazer from the University of Waterloo purchased and worn by Peter (Otis) Dallas, an undergraduate student in the second kinesiology class of 1972. The jacket includes a patch with the University of Waterloo name and the logo for the School of Physical Education and Recreation on the chest pocket. The order for the student blazers was placed by Dr. Robert (Bob) Norman and Neil Widmeyer, both faculty members in the School of Physical Education and Recreation at the time. Peter Dallas wore the blazer at every alumni reunion and recently celebrated his fiftieth-year anniversary in 2022.

In partnership with the Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism, the University of Waterloo Archives (UWA) conducted a series of interviews to capture the voices of Black students, faculty and staff connected to the University of Waterloo. The goal for the Black Oral Histories project was to preserve histories in a way that is familiar to Black identity and Blackness as the African diaspora has a deeply embedded oral history culture.

Interviewees were selected by members of an advisory committee that was struck to ensure the project captured a cross-selection of individuals from the Waterloo community. Working with Jermal Jones, Associate Director, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Access, Library, six people were interviewed.

The interviewees include:

A gavel plaque given to Paul Koch (BASc ’63) in recognition of his role as the first B Term President for the Engineering Society of the University of Waterloo (now Waterloo Engineering Society) from 1958-1959. In addition to the gavel, the plaque also features an engraving plate with the following inscription: PAUL KOCH / PRESIDENT / ENGINEERING SOCIETY / OF THE / UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO / 1958-59.

One item of correspondence addressed to Maryse Choisy by an unidentified sex worker, signed "a fan." The writer of the letter states that she has read Choisy's "Psychoanalysis of the Prostitute" and encourages her not to make the mistake of making generalizations about all sex workers. In specific, she points out that she does not consider her clients lovers and thinks of them as no more a customer than a waitress thinks of diners in a restaurant. She also states that she is engaged in sex work purely for the money. As well, the writer notes that she has a pimp and that they have a positive relationship, are married, and enjoy a healthy sex life. They met while she was already working as a sex worker, and he was already working as a pimp and had no desire to change each other's profession. She also notes that they did not sleep together until after they moved in together. The letter is ended by noting that they eventually would like to settle down, and that they are saving to open their own bar or liquor store one day.

The poem addresses then President Andrew Johnson and criticizes his approach to the South at the end of the American Civil War. She believed that Johnson was too lenient on the South and allowed too much wealth and influence to remain with Southern Confederate politicians. She also criticizes Johnson for being unconcerned with Black suffrage or the rights of Black soldiers who fought for the Union. She ends her poem with the rallying cry "...let the ballot finish what the bayonet has begun."
