In partnership with the Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism, the University of Waterloo Archives (UWA) conducted a series of interviews to capture the voices of Black students, faculty and staff connected to the University of Waterloo. The goal for the Black Oral Histories project was to preserve histories in a way that is familiar to Black identity and Blackness as the African diaspora has a deeply embedded oral history culture.

Interviewees were selected by members of an advisory committee that was struck to ensure the project captured a cross-selection of individuals from the Waterloo community. Working with Jermal Jones, Associate Director, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Access, Library, six people were interviewed.

• 3. Lannois Carroll-Woolery, Manager of Data Analytics & Reporting for the Department of Institutional Analysis & Planning at the University of Waterloo, and current President of the Caribbean Canadian Association of Waterloo Region (CCAWR)

• 4. Dr. Murchison Callender, Professor Emeritus, School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Waterloo

• 5. Samantha Lange, student studying physics in the Faculty of Science at the University of Waterloo

• 6. Dr. Vershawn Young, an artist, actor, diversity consultant and joint appointed professor in Communications Arts and English Language and Literature at the University of Waterloo where he has been the director of Waterloo's Black Studies program since its launch in 2022

More than 2 million negatives taken between 1938 and 2001 by staff photographers at the Kitchener-Waterloo Record (KWR) and its predecessors. Providing a historical look at the Region of Waterloo, the Collection includes documentary photographs of local news events, community activities, regional development, human-interest stories, businesses, schools, and sports teams. Portraits of business and community leaders, as well as commissioned photos taken for advertising purposes, are part of the Collection. It also includes scrapbooks containing clippings and pictures that appeared in the paper from 1971 to 1995.

Typescript lectures given during séances held under the supervision of medium Thomas Lacey in Waterloo, Kitchener, and Hamilton from 1934 to 1951. Some lectures and a press clipping featuring a letter to the editor against capital punishment written by Thomas Lacey are contained within a scrapbook. Lectures range from various topics including life and death, peace, Gandhi, and spiritualism.

Next to it is a newspaper clipping regarding the death of Fiske titled "Death of Mrs. Gen. William O. Fiske".

Materials relate primarily to the professional life of John Herbert, from 1940 to 1981, such as his literary works; theatre advertising, programs, and photographs; correspondences to critics, fans, his agent, and others; and reviews on his works. The literary works include drafts of his plays as well as manuscripts of his short stories and poetry.

The ephemera covers publicity, advertising and programs of his theatre productions. Outside of his theatre career, there are also materials pertaining to his personal life. Newspaper clippings document his opinions on social issues such as homelessness, unemployment, and the rights of gays and lesbians. Herbert also wrote biographies and photographic histories of his own personal life from childhood to early adulthood. Fonds consists of twelve daily diaries, intermittently spanning between 1907 and 1948, that contain entries pertaining to daily farm operations. Included, though unrelated, are two ledgers from a Berlin (Kitchener), Ontario general store for the years 1893 and 1907. Accounts listed include purchases by John King, father of William Lyon Mackenzie King, that help document the lifestyle of the King family while living at Woodside, now a National Historic Site.

Fonds consists of two binders compiled by Dr. Henry H. Crapo when he was a Trustee with the Wasemquia Charitable Trust. The binders document the Vestris Prize Competition for Choreography in 1967 and 1968, which the Wasemquia Charitable Trust helped to sponsor. Fonds documents scheduling and planning for the competition, as well as lists of competitors and judges.

Correspondence addressed to and from Henry Crapo, discussing various topics such as invitations sent to renowned ballet dancers in the New York world to judge in the competition are included, along with press releases and letters to advertisement agencies to promote the competition. Other records in the binders include clippings from newspaper and magazines advertising the competition, as well as black and white photographs depicting trophies from the competitions and scenes of performance entries.

Fonds also includes a yellow patina bronze statue that depicts a caricature of Auguste Vestris, which acted as the central theme for the Vestris Prize competition. The statue portrays Auguste Vestris with an oversized head, wings, and a garland.

Includes correspondence with Elizabeth Long regarding her part in painting plates for the Canadian Senate's gift of hand-decorated china to Lord and Lady Aberdeen at the emd of the former's term as Governor General of Canada in 1898.

Typed draft of "The Anthology of Canadian Women Writers" edited by Rota Herzberg Lister. Includes one typescript which is primarily photocopies, with some originals draft of the work composed of notes written by Rota on the various authors and excerpts from the authors' writings.

The women included in the anthology wrote between 1760-1980 and include Margaret Atwood, L.M. Montgomery, Pauline Johnson, Susanna Moodie, Mary Quayle Innis, Luella Crieghton, and others.

It does not appear that the work was ever published.

Fonds consists of one holograph letter dated March 9, 1944 from Sackville-West to Mrs. Leslie Hotson discussing the effects of war on South-West England.

One register book kept by the Ontario Association of Architects for the years 1890-1899. The book lists dues paid by each member of the association as well as money received for exam fees, filing articles, student fees and more. Also includes one item of correspondence from Mills & Hutton, architects asking the secretary for information on rates for architectural work. The register was kept by William R. Gregg.

Fonds consists of one 141 page carbon typescript of "Among the beavers: Canadians and others" by Gladys Lillian King. The work is a personal narrative of the work done by the Military Women Police in and around the Beaver Hut in the Strand, London. Also includes two photographs of King with others.

Consists of one holograph letter from John Galt addressed to "Croker." The letter requests that Croker publish the enclosed items in his magazine if they are not too late reaching him.

Fonds consists of materials created and accumulated by Dr. Olive Ruth Russell during the course of her personal and professional life. Includes biographical information, publications and transcripts of speeches.

Fonds consists of correspondence, documents, journals, and a photograph relating to Colin Rankin's activity as a Fur Trader for the Hudson's Bay Company. Included are three journals kept by Donald McKay, Fur Trader, between 1799 and 1806, which were acquired by Rankin probably during his stay in the Temiskaming district.

One item of correspondence from Charles Gaston Smith Jr. of the Harvard Club of Boston to Eleanor Hallowell Abbott. The letter is dated July 25, 1924 and in it Smith asks Coburn if she knows of any girls in real life that are of the same quality as those in her books.

Fonds consists primarily of correspondence, 116 letters, from Beulah Alloway to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Misener of Brantford, Ont. The letters describe her journey to Africa and her daily life and work as a missionary in Kenya. Also included are newsletters sent out by the Alloways, correspondence relating to Beulah's death, and 4 photographs.

Fonds consists of materials created and accumulated by Mary B. Churchill (nee Brewer). Includes a letter from Mary to an aunt, a clipping regarding Mary's daughter, Harriet Churchill, and an autograph album.

Collection consists of 13 unused postcards concerning suffragettes and women's rights. Included are photographs of Christobel Pankhurst with Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence at a demonstration in Hyde Park, one of a suffragette in prison, a portrait of Emmeline Pankhurst, and Flora Drummond protesting opposite the English House of Common. The remainder are cartoons.

Collection consists of 26 items of correspondence written by women writers, primarily of the 1920's. Many of the letters are addressed to Edward Marsh and St. John Ervine and concern a tribute to Thomas Hardy for his 81st birthday.

Materials relating to equipment owned and purchased by Dumont Press. Includes purchase orders, inventories of supplies and cabinets, layouts of the office, a price list for Dumont Press, and a document listing jobs needing to be done and who does them.

Correspondence and notes between members of the Dumont Press, the Communist Party of Canada (Marxist–Leninist) (CPC M-L), and the Anti Imperial Alliance (AIA) of the University of Waterloo. The correspondence outlines a political disagreement between the left wing politics of those who worked at the press and the CPC M-L and AIA. The Dumont Press had been allowing the CPC M-L and the AIA to use the press to print their materials, but indicated that they had become uncomfortable with the division between the groups. Part of this disagreement was also what was happening with the Chevron, the student newspaper of the University of Waterloo, at the time. The Dumont Press printed the Chevron and indicated that they were finding it difficult to do their work under the political perspective of the AIA, which was the dominant voice of the Chevron at the time. Also present is one item of correspondence from Dr. Henry Crapo, professor in the Faculty of Mathematics, at the University of Waterloo. Dr. Crapo was requesting back the money that he had loaned the Dumont Press due to the press' political disagreements with the CPC M-L, the AIA and the Canada-China Friendship Society.

Minnie sent the letters to Eda who was still living in Kitchener, while she was living and working as a nurse in New York City. The letters detail her experiences as a nurse, her private life, and her thoughts on friends and family.

A gavel plaque given to Paul Koch (BASc ’63) in recognition of his role as the first B Term President for the Engineering Society of the University of Waterloo (now Waterloo Engineering Society) from 1958-1959. The plaque was presented to Paul Koch during Engineering Nite '63, an event hosted by the Engineering Society. In addition to the gavel, the plaque features an engraving plate with the following inscription: PAUL KOCH / PRESIDENT / ENGINEERING SOCIETY / OF THE / UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO / 1958-59.

A cookbook created by members of the Student Wives Club in 1964 that included recipes for meat dishes, vegetables, desserts, and odds and ends. Examples of recipes include hamburger vegetable pie, cheese salad supreme, nervous pudding, potato fudge, and pink lady punch.

The cookbook was printed with a Gestetner offset printing machine and features pink polka dot covers.

One scrapbook kept by Maria Louise Clough while on a trip from Boston to England, Scotland, France and Italy in 1886 and 1887. The scrapbook contains cards, correspondence, clippings, ephemera, and realia (including plant material), and provides insight into the activities and tastes of a young woman from that period of time. Among the contents are: Cunard ephemera (including deck plans, menus, passenger list), theatre ephemera (including Henry Irving in Faust at the Lyceum), a cigarette, lace, Westminster Abbey ephemera, transportation tickets, a moving-part Christmas card, fringe forming part of the decoration of the funeral car of the Duke of Wellington, postcards, engravings, hotel ephemera, identified leaves and flowers, etc.

A collection of 23 prospectus, mail order catalogues, and subscription requests for erotic books. The prospectus are couched in the terms of literature, anthropology and sexology in attempts to disguise the erotic nature of the works.

Included is correspondence concerning William Daum Euler, leaflets regarding an election campaign and anti-war messages, as well as various reference materials.

Three letters written by Marion Webster during her time as a missionary in Angola for the Evangelical Congregational Church in Angola. Her letters detail the history and geography of Angola, as well as activities undertaken by her. Also includes 5 envelopes from Marion Webster that do not correspondence with the letters.

One item of correspondence addressed to Maryse Choisy by an unidentified sex worker, signed "a fan." The writer of the letter states that she has read Choisy's "Psychoanalysis of the Prostitute" and encourages her not to make the mistake of making generalizations about all sex workers. In specific, she points out that she does not consider her clients lovers and thinks of them as no more a customer than a waitress thinks of diners in a restaurant. She also states that she is engaged in sex work purely for the money. As well, the writer notes that she has a pimp and that they have a positive relationship, are married, and enjoy a healthy sex life. They met while she was already working as a sex worker, and he was already working as a pimp and had no desire to change each other's profession. She also notes that they did not sleep together until after they moved in together. The letter is ended by noting that they eventually would like to settle down, and that they are saving to open their own bar or liquor store one day.

A collection of food circulars distributed during the First World War in both Canada and the United States. The circulars provide information on food nutrition, rationing and recipes.

Materials used or accumulated by Robert "Bob" Hanselman during his time as a student at the University of Waterloo. Includes photographs of the University's first buildings, a slide rule, a book with mathematical tables used by Hanselman in his courses, two yearbooks, and Hanselman's briefcase.

A teal sweater designed by Professor Emeritus Peter Ponzo for the Faculty of Mathematics that features illustrations of various animals on the front representing different groups within the faculty. Included in the illustration is a penguin representing the artificial intelligence group, a flamingo representing the Computer Science Group, beavers also representing Computer Science, as well as a python and a lion although their representation is unknown. In addition, the sweater illustration includes drawings of the Math and Computer Building, the Waterloo Crest, a Waterloo Math logo, two individuals wearing pink ties and other small details such as computers, pencils, waves, graphs, a maple leaf, and more.

The front left-side of the jacket includes a patch with the University of Waterloo crest and motto. The back of the jacket contains white letter patches that spell out, “UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO.” The left sleeve of the jacket contains white letter patches that spell out, “SCI.” The right sleeve of the jacket includes the white number patches, “67.” Based on these number patches, it is likely the student that owned this jacket graduated from the university in 1967.

A red melton wool jacket from the University of Waterloo Faculty of Arts worn by an undergraduate student in the early 1960s. The jacket is lined with brown paisley polyester satin. The back of the jacket contains white letter patches that spell out, “UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO.” The left sleeve of the jacket includes white letter and number patches that spell out, “ARTS / 65.” Based on these number patches, it is likely the student that owned this jacket graduated from the university in 1965.

The front left-side of the jacket includes a patch with the UW initials and an Engineering banner. The back of the jacket contains gold letter patches that spell out, “UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO.” The right sleeve of the jacket includes the gold number patches, “64.”

The collection includes a gold leather jacket with University of Waterloo branding, worn by James Land (BA '72), that features patches on the front, back and sleeves displaying the university crest, motto, and program details. A handknit scarf in the university colors of black, gold, and white, which belonged to James Land, is also included. In addition, the collection contains a black leather jacket worn by Kathleen Land (BA '99), James Land's daughter, who also attended the University of Waterloo as an undergraduate student. The black leather jacket features University of Waterloo branding and patches on the front, back and sleeves displaying the university crest, motto, and program details.

A white jacket from the Waterloo College and Associate Faculties (also referred to as the Associate Faculties) worn by Robert Judd (BASc '63), an undergraduate student, in 1958. The front left-side of the jacket features a design printed in blue that includes the school name, “Waterloo College,” the Waterloo College coat of arms, and the Waterloo College motto “Veritas omnia vincit.” The back of the jacket features the word “Engineering” printed in blue lettering across the centre. The jacket was manufactured by Beaver Fine Outerwear.

Robert Judd arrived on campus in September 1957 and joined the second cohort of students in the newly established Associate Faculties. Judd began classes in October 1957 and adhered to a 40-hour weekly classroom schedule. Classes were held in temporary portables located in the Waterloo College parking lot. Robert Judd likely purchased the jacket in the spring of 1958 and wore it until a new grey school jacket became available around 1960. He kept this jacket for many years as an alumnus and recently celebrated his sixtieth-year anniversary in 2023.

A gold two-button blazer from the University of Waterloo worn by Peter Dallas (BSc '72), an undergraduate student in one of the first kinesiology classes at the University of Waterloo. The front left side of the jacket includes a patch with the University of Waterloo name and the School of Physical Education and Recreation logo on the chest pocket. The jacket was manufactured by Sainthill-Levine Co. Ltd.

According to Peter Dallas, the blazer was ordered for students in the first kinesiology classes by Dr. Robert (Bob) Norman and Neil Widmeyer, both faculty members in the School of Physical Education and Recreation during that period.

Peter Dallas wore the blazer with pride at numerous alumni reunions and had recently celebrated his fiftieth-year anniversary in 2022.
