Photo caption from published photos: "At top above [negative not found in 1940s negative envelopes] are former switchboard operators of the Elmira office of the Bell Telephone Co. The switch-over to the dial system occurred yesterday. Left to right are Misses Edna Carnochan, Laura Schmehl, Eileen Schmidt, Besale McCormick and Rita Hoffer. Lower left [negative not found in1940s negative envelopes] is Mayor B. H. Brown making the first call, and lower right [see 39-3 for closest version], Engineer Harry Hiscock testing the new equipment."
