      General note

The final issue of the student newspaper under the name The Coryphaeus was volume 7, number 13, dated October 28, 1966. The following issue, published November 4, 1966 (volume 7, number 14), introduced a new title: The Chevron.

Editor-in-chief Jim Nagel explained in the November 4 issue that the change was prompted by the difficulty many readers had pronouncing and spelling 'coryphaeus.' The Chevron was chosen for its simplicity, its connection to the university’s coat of arms, and its symbolism as a modern insignia of authority, reflecting the paper’s aspiration to be respected. The upward-pointing chevron also represented the shared ideal of both the press and the university to strive for truth and justice.[1]

Several student writers opposed the change, arguing Nagel had not consulted the student body. They felt the name Coryphaeus was part of campus tradition, well known across Canada, and memorable for its distinctiveness. In protest, these editors funded a print run of their own version of the title page for volume 7, number 14, dated November 7, 1966, under the original name The Coryphaeus. This urged students to lobby Nagel and the student council to restore the name. Despite these efforts, The Chevron prevailed, and The Coryphaeus title was retired.[2]

Around the same time, concerns emerged that The Chevron was not giving engineers fair coverage. This sparked a short-lived push for a new paper called The New Coryphaeus, which encouraged readers to support it or revive Enginews. The New Coryphaeus lasted only two issues, though Enginews relaunched in July 1967. This effort appears unrelated to the original name-change controversy.[3]
