Nobel Prize chocolate wrapper by Marou.

A chocolate bar wrapper created by Vincent Mourou, co-founder of Marou chocolate and son of Gérard Mourou, with the help of co-founder Sam Maruta and Rice Creative partner Joshua Breidenbach to commemorate Gérard Mourou (Haut-collège of École Polytechnique) and optical physicist Donna Strickland’s Nobel Prize in Physics for their Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) technique. The design of the wrapper featured Mourou and Strickland’s condensed three-page prize winning paper with much of the technical jargon replaced with the word “chocolate.”

The wrapper in the file only includes the altered copy of the three-page paper that was wrapped around the gold foil lining the chocolate bar. It does not include the additional two-sided enclosure that featured white paper with gold ink listing the name of the chocolate bar, the event, and the flavour inside on the exterior side and luminescent triangles on the interior side.

Six two-sided 4” x 6” cards featuring an image of Donna Strickland designed by Beyond Curie, a design project celebrating women in STEM. The card features an image of Strickland using a piece of equipment, possibly a chirped pulse laser apparatus. The cards were sold by Beyond Curie as part of a 42-card set each featuring a small description about a different scientist or technologist. The Donna Strickland card was card number 42. File also includes four envelopes.

Caption on back of the card: “DONNA STRICKLAND is a Canadian optical physicist and pioneer in the field of pulsed lasers. In 2018, she won the Nobel Prize in Physics for developing a method of generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses, called chirped pulse amplification (CPA).

Collection consists of 169 19th century American photographs. Included are 115 carte-de-visites, 40 cabinet portraits, 2 albums, 11 miscellaneous photographs and 1 envelope of miscellaneous business and greeting cards.

Most are albumen type photographs depicting various people including infants, children, and adults. The photographs come from various studios across the United States though the majority come from studios in New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Illinois. The photographs, since rehoused, were originally housed in two albums decorated with an intricate relief on the cover and a metal clasp lock.

A promotional poster for Homecoming 68 at the University of Waterloo advertising a dance organized by the Federation of Students, now known as the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association (WUSA). The poster indicates that students affiliated with the Radical Student Movement (RSM) were not expected to attend the dances.

This poster reflects the growing debate on campus in the 1960s around student radicals and the RSM. While some believed that students at the University of Waterloo, and the student governing body, should engage in radical social change, others did not.

Some of the activities held during Summer Weekend 68 included a boat race, casino night, professional wrestling match, skateboarding and tandem bike competition, and a concert by Little Fillimore. File includes Jim Keron's application to be Chairman of Summer Weekend 68, correspondence, notes, budget statements, event descriptions, stickers, two stamps, event passes, tickets to the semi-formal dance dubbed 'Christmas in July,' and twenty posters (some duplicates). Materials related to the Aryan Affairs Commission (AAC) gathered by Jim Keron, likely when he was a member of the AAC. Includes the meeting minutes of the Aryan Affairs Commission (AAC) privy council held on June 6, 1968; June 10, 1968; June 20, 1968; July 8, 1968; July 15, 1968, and August 21, 1968. File also includes correspondence, an application for membership, a cheque book, sweatshirt order forms, a special occasion liquor license, a petition to disband the privy council, a receipt for stamps, and handwritten notes.

Furthermore, the file contains a wood-mounted rubber stamp with a handle. The rubber stamp die features the group's name, Aryan Affairs Commission, in small lettering at the top and the words "rubber stamp" prominently displayed in the center. Members of the AAC likely used this stamp to mark posters or flyers on bulletin boards around campus to satirize university administration requirements that such materials be stamped for approval.

Larry Burko campaign posters.

Two small posters used as part of Larry Burko’s campaign to be elected President of the Federation of Students (now the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association, WUSA). Both posters reference the term “sandbox” or “radicals.”

These posters reflect the growing debate on campus in the 1960s around student radicals and the Radical Student Movement (RSM). While some believed that students at the University of Waterloo, and the student governing body, should engage in radical social change, others did not. Larry Burko did not support the RSM and used this perspective as part of his campaign. Burko won the election and served as the President of the Federation of Students for the 1970-1971 term.
