Visual Material

Series consists of photographs and other visual materials relating to the Kitchener Water Commission and the Grand River Conservation Commission. Photographs relating to the Kitchener Water Commission depict construction of water works facilities, pump houses, and pumping equipment mainly at the Shoemaker (now Greenbrook) and Strange Street pumping stations. Some photographs include the water commissioners. Photographs relating to the GRCC depict the the construction of the Shand and Conestogo dams.

Series also includes a mid-19th century portrait and cartes-de-visite of unidentified women and men, perhaps friends or relatives of the Pequegnat family.

Berlin Water Commission : Correspondence

Series consists of incoming correspondence relating to the operation of the Berlin Water Commission for the years 1899, and 1901-1905. Correspondence is addressed to the water commissioners in general, or to individual commissioners (mainly chairman J.C. Breithaupt) or the superintendent (W. Mahlon Davis and his successor Henry Hymmen).

Series consists of sound recordings. Some recordings relate to management theory, created or acquired for training purposes. Recordings also contain interviews with Electrohome employees, product advertisements, as well as other events including a board meeting and the 75th anniversary concert. Includes audiocassettes and audio reels.

Visual : Moving Images

Series consists of moving images relating to various aspects of Electrohome. Many of the items were created for the purposes of public relations, sales and marketing, and advertising and promotion, as well as to document some of the company's facilities, operations, and history. Subjects include:

  • company presentations and reports;
  • meetings;
  • product presentations and demonstrations;
  • promotional material;
  • footage relating to services provided by Electrohome for NASA at the John F. Kennedy Space Centre for the launch of space shuttles in the early 1980s;
  • CKCO-TV news footage relating to Electrohome, the Pollocks, and other senior management;
  • company events including the 75th anniversary celebrations and employee Christmas parties; etc.

Notable titles include: "The Changing World of Electrohome," "Circa 75," "Mark of a Man : C.A. Pollock," "Then and now : Electrohome Electronics Group," "John Pollock interview : Sunday AM," "Howard Main interview with Gary MacLaren," C.A. Public Relations Manager's Files

Series consists of records accumulated and used by Robert Lovell in his role as Public Relations Manager (1963-1988). Includes mainly material relating to services provided by Electrohome for NASA at the John F. Kennedy Space Centre for the launch of the space shuttle Columbia on November 12, 1981: correspondence and memoranda, ms. notes, newsletters, advertising and promotional material, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other material.

Series also includes records accumulated by Lovell in his role on the board of directors for Junior Achievement of Kitchener-Waterloo Inc.: agendas and minutes of meetings, correspondence to board members, etc.

Series consists of financial reports for Electrohome and the various segments or groups within the company as well as some subsidiaries (Robotel and Fakespace). Reports cover the years 1985-1989 and 1991-2000, and some reports include memoranda to the board of directors. Some of the records probably belonged to J.G. Gingerich, vice-president, finance, and later corporate controller, and then chief financial officer and treasurer.

Executive Officers Files : Administration of A & C Boehmer Limited

Series consists of records relating to the administration and the potential sale of A & C Boehmer Limited (Kitchener, ON), accumulated and used by Carl A. Pollock and John A. Pollock in their roles as company directors. The company operated as the Boehmer Box Co., a family-run paper box manufacturing company established in 1874 in Kitchener. Carl Pollock was a director, secretary-treasurer, and vice-president of the company.

In 1974, the directors authorized Floyd Boehmer (president), Carl Pollock, and John Pollock to attempt the sale of the company, but it is unclear whether the company was actually sold at that time. Series includes financial statements, correspondence, memoranda, reports, agreements, ms. notes, and other material.

Series consists of visual material produced and accumulated by various personnel and departments within Electrohome. Some of the material may have been used by Robert Lovell, Public Relations Manager (1963 to ca. 1988), or his successors, as it appears that some photographs were taken for internal and external publicity purposes.

Some of the material appears to have been pulled from elsewhere in collection, probably for use in Raymond Stanton's book Visionary Thinking: The Story of Canada's Electrohome, or for other purposes associated with the 90th anniversary celebration or researching company history. Includes photographs, slides, negatives, transparencies, contact sheets, and printing proofs.

Scrapbooks

Series consists of four scrapbooks containing press clippings, photographs, and ephemera relating to Carl A. Pollock and his activities as Electrohome president and chairman of the board of directors, his involvement in the community, and his personal life. One of the scrapbooks was presented to Pollock by the Canadian Manufacturers' Association in memory of his term as association president (1962-1963).

Series consists of press coverage of Electrohome; the company's operations, activities, and products; issues of interest to the company; and Electrohome personnel. Includes press clippings, photocopies of press clippings, magazines containing articles about Electrohome, and reprints of magazine and newspaper articles. Some of the press clippings were obtained through the Canadian Press Clipping Service. Some of the clippings are loose, and some were compiled into binders corresponding to a specific time period.

Visionary Thinking : Working Files

Series consists of material relating to the proposal, production, distribution, and lanuch of the corporate history Visionary Thinking : The Story of Canada's Electrohome by Raymond Stanton, published by Canadian Corporate Histories (Kitchener, ON) in 1997. Includes files of research material about the history of Electrohome, probably compiled by Nicola McLaughlin for Stanton's use, and files of visual material used in the book, pulled from other files in the collection most likely by McLaughlin.

Includes photocopies of product literature, press clippings, correspondence, reports, news releases, and other documents; slides, transparencies, photographs, and other graphic material;original product literature, including brochures, leaflets, parts price lists, instruction manuals, and sales manuals; news releases; press clippings; correspondence; memoranda; ms. notes; forms; and other material.

Museum and Archives

Series consists of material relating to the development, organization, and operation of a company museum and archives. The museum was originally established in 1967 as a centennial project and part of the 60th anniversary celebration, in order to display products produced by Electrohome since 1907. John Koegler was the company historian and museum curator.

The museum as well as the company archives were given renewed attention in preparation for the company's 90th anniversary and the production of a corporate history book in 1997. At that time, William McGregor (former vice-president of Electrohome) was involved museum administration, and Nicola McLaughlin was hired to research company history and process and manage the archives.

Series includes material relating to the day-to-day operation of the museum and archives, the collection and processing of items, and the recording of historical information. Includes forms, correspondence, memoranda, press clippings, photocopies of historical advertisements and other documents, photographs and slides, ms. notes, meeting minutes, and other material.

Company History and Anniversaries

Series consists of records relating to the celebration of Electrohome's anniversaries and to the history of the company. Includes material relating to the planning, organization, and publicity of the company's 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 75th, and 90th anniversaries; material relating to the recording of company history; and material relating to subsidiary and other affiliated companies. Series also includes material collected and used by John Koegler in his role as company historian, which he assumed ca. 1956.

Includes correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, ephemera, press clippings, ms. and typed notes, photographs, speeches, programs and schedules, fliers, brochures, ms. and typed histories, and other material. Some of the anniversary-related files were likely compiled and used in the planning of subsequent anniversary celebrations.

Series consists of records relating to the involvement of Electrohome in the engineering and manufacture of products during WWII, including material relating to production councils from the company's three divisions (furniture and woodworking, radio and communications, and appliances and metal products), the Radio Production Alliance, the Canadian Aircraft Workers' Association, and contract renegotiation after the war. Includes photographs, correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, instruction manuals, ms. notes, technical drawings, and other material.

Series consists of product literature promoting Service Electrohome and AABEX Electronic Services and the consumer service and commercial systems available from these divisions. The Consumer Service Division, with branches and franchised outlits across Canada, became known as Service Electrohome in 1977 as it diversified into the commercial and industrial sectors, and in 1982, the department was renamed AABEX Electronic Services.

Series consists of material developed for, distributed to, and accumulated by Electrohome sales staff, dealers, and distributors. Includes material relating to promotional campaigns, merchandising, sales contests, and dealer education; as well as material used for co-operative advertising, point-of-purchase advertising, and for reference by dealers. Includes product literature, advertisements, price lists, advertising schedules, radio advertisement scripts, memoranda, sales manuals and kits, selling aids, dealer agreements and forms, photographs, and other material.

Sales and Marketing : Projection Systems Marketing and Communications Manager Files

Series consists of records accumulated and used by Jeffrey Brum, Marketing and Communications Manager, Projection Systems. In 1987, the Electrohome Electronics group was divided into four business sectors: Display Systems, Projection Systems, Digital Video (i.e. Jazz Systems), and Operational Services (e.g. circuit board operations). At that time, it seems that the marketing, communications, and public relations functions were transferred from a centralized department to each of these sectors.

Records in this series relate to the development of marketing and communications plans for the Projection Systems sector, the design and production of product literature and publicity material, advertising plans and activities in co-operation with dealers, and the development of a long-range strategic plan for the sector.
