Catharine Hailer was born August 16, 1834 in Berlin, Ontario to parents Margaret Riehl and Jacob Hailer, purportedly the first native German to settle in what is now the Region of Waterloo Ontario. She met Philip Ludwig (known as Louis) Breithaupt of Buffalo when he visited Berlin on business. The couple married February 8, 1853 in Berlin. Together Louis and Catherine had ten children, seven of whom survived to adulthood, and some of whom played an instrumental role in the growth and development of what is today Kitchener, Ontario. The family lived in Buffalo until relocating to Berlin in 1861.
Catharine was active in community affairs, most notably the Zion Evangelical Church. After her husband's death in 1880 she travelled to Germany, the Pacific Coast, as well as to the United States to visit family and friends, and seasonally to the family cottage "Bay View Cottage" in Penetaguishene, Ont.
Catharine died July 5, 1910 and was buried with Louis.

Series consists of records related to Catharine Hailer Breithaupt including 91 pieces of correspondence received by Catharine Hailer Breithaupt between 1852-1863 and 1880-1910 and two diaries. The diary documents the first part of Catharine's first trip to Germany in 1888. The early correspondence provides further documentation of the establishment of Louis Breithaupt's tanning business in Berlin, Ontario; the later correspondence is primarily from her children, including her nephew Louis Henry Wagner.

This accrual adds significantly to the material already acquired relating to Catharine Hailer Breithaupt. The original fonds contains a trip diary for the second half of her first trip to Germany; this accession completes the account with the diary for the first half.
The original fonds contains a few documents and material relating to the estate of Catharine Breithaupt; this accession documents her life and activities with correspondence recieved from 1852 until her death in 1910, with some gaps.
Our knowledge of Catharine's life and activities is greatly enlarged by the presence in this accrual of correspondence written to others, to her husband Louis Breithaupt, to her son Albert Liborius Breithaupt and to her grandson Frederick. These letters are described in the correspondence series of the individuals who received the letters. Unlike her husband Louis Breithaupt, who writes in both English and German, Catharine writes only in German.
More records relating to the Jacob Wagner family can be found in the Wagner Hailer Family fonds and in the original Breithaupt Hewetson Clark family fonds. Jacob Wagner married Margaret Hailer, sister of Catharine Hailer. Their son, Louis Henry, was brought up in Louis and Catharine Breithaupt's household. The original fonds contains diaries he kept as a child and young adult; this accession contains correspondence from him to his aunt Catharine and to his first cousin Albert.
