General note
The food pledge was an effort by the United States Food Administration and Council of Defense to encourage Americans to conserve food during the First World War. Homeowners were encouraged to sign pledge cards and put posters in their windows indicating that they were making efforts to conserve food. The pledge read: "At table I'll not leave a scrap of food upon my plate. And I'll not eat between meals But for supper time I'll wait."
