General note
Bill C-250 An Act to amend the Criminal Code (hate propaganda) was a private Member’s bill introduced in the House of Commons by Svend Robinson on November 22, 2001. Bill C-250 amended the Criminal Code that prohibited the public incitement of hatred and the willful promotion of hatred towards any identifiable group based on colour, race, religion, and ethnic origin. The amendment expanded the existing interpretation of an identifiable group to include groups identifiable based on sexual orientation. Bill C-250 received Royal Assent on April 29, 2004.
General note
Bill C-447 An act to protect the institution of marriage was a private Member’s bill introduced in the House of Commons by Grant Hill (Macleod) on September 18, 2003. Bill C-447 was intended to prevent the legal definition of marriage in Canada from changing to include same-sex couples. Bill C-447 died on the Order Paper when the 37th Parliament, 2nd session concluded on November 12, 2003.
General note
On August 27, 2003, Andrew Telegdi participated in a town hall meeting held at the Waterloo Pentecostal Assembly in Waterloo, Ontario to discuss same-sex marriage and Bill C-250. The town hall meeting was organized by Tristan Emmanuel, a Canadian political and religious activist. Emmanuel is an outspoken opponent of same-sex marriage in Canada. Frustrated by the discussions and the way in which Bill C-250 was misrepresented, Telegdi and a group of approximately twenty people walked out of the meeting. The confrontation between Telegdi and organizers of the meeting was subsequently featured on local news stations and media outlets.
