    Biographical history

William Bruce Dendy, Canadian architectural historian, was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1948 to Merrill and Oliver Dendy. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1971, received a B.A. in Architectural History from Cambridge University in 1973, and in 1979 received two Masters degrees in architectural history, one from the University of Cambridge, and one from Columbia University in New York.

Dendy worked as an architectural historian for the Toronto Historical Board from 1973 until 1976, taught Canadian architectural history at the University of Toronto, at the University of Waterloo, at Carleton University in Ottawa, at Ryerson Polytechnic Institute in Toronto, and at the Toronto Urban Studies Centre. Dendy also worked on a consultancy basis as architectural historian to many Toronto-based architectural firms, developers, and government agencies, and also led architectural walking tours of Toronto.

Dendy's two published works, Lost Toronto (1978) and Toronto Observed: Its Architecture, Patrons, and History (1986), were both published by the Oxford University Press and both won Toronto Book Awards. In 1993 Dendy was awarded an honorary membership in the Ontario Association of Architects, and in the same year he was given an Allied Arts Award for his lectures and books on historical architecture.

Dendy died on May 29, 1993 in Toronto at the Casey House due to complications from HIV/AIDS.

    Scope and content

File consists of article clippings, catalogues, correspondence, ephemera, and miscellaneous handwritten notes by William Dendy relating to his consultancy work and research. This includes a meeting agenda for the Toronto Society of Architect's Urban Action Committee, copies of conservation reports from the Toronto Historical Board, photocopies of the finding aids to the J. Morris Woolfson and Ewart collection at Library and Archives Canada, and a letter from Eric Haldenby regarding Dendy's participating in the Parkin Conference at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. Of note are brochures for the Graystone Hall of Fame International Jazz Museum, Willistead Manor, Antiques and Unites in Southwestern Ontario, and the North American Black Historical Museum and Cultural Centre, as well as a Family Composition, Income and Assets Review from from City Park Co-operative Apartments Inc.

The file also includes clippings about architecture, newsletters from Boigon and Armstrong Architects, Toronto Society of Architects, and Toronto Region Architectural Conservancy, and pamphlets from various museums and events. The two photographs in the file are enclosed in correspondence from Ann D.W. Haggerty of the Chaplin-Eglinton Area Ratepayers Association regarding Dendy's consultation work on the 643 Eglinton Avenue West area. The photographs, along with the photocopied zoning maps and architectural drawings, are of the 643 Eglinton West building and the surrounding area.
