Field Notes

Series consists of material relating to field work conducted by Hynes in various locations throughout his career, including the British Isles, Africa, the British West Indies, Australia, and North America. Includes mainly notebooks and loose papers containing ms. and ts. field notes, most recorded by Hynes but some also recorded by research assistants or technicians. Notebooks include drawings, charts, graphs, maps, etc. Series also includes some ms. notes by Hynes from the scientific literature as well as a small amount of correspondence.

File consists of a hardcover notebook containing ms. field notes by Hynes. Includes enclosures (ms. notes, charts, graphs). Note on first page: "I have now reached a stage in my work on plecoptera where I feel that regular notes in the form of a log book are desirable."

File consists of a hardcover notebook containing ms. field notes, most of which were recorded by Hynes. Most notes relate to his research in the British Isles and include data about stoneflies and amphipods. Some notes relate to research in Germany. Notebook includes enclosures (maps, ts. notes, ms. notes).

Most notes relate to his research in the streams of the British Isles, and many were taken at the Hirnant research station in Wales. Also present is a small amount of correspondence and ms. notes from the scientific literature (1909-1934) on African stoneflies.

File consists of research material relating mainly to stoneflies in Tasmania and other parts of Australia. Includes ms. field notes, charts, and graphs. Also present are some ts. notes, a map of Victoria, and one piece of correspondence. File also includes some field notes from research stations in Venezuela, Hawaii, Fiji, and New Zealand. Field notes taken by Hynes as well as other researchers or assistants.

Field notes were taken in various locations, including Georgian Bay, Eramosa (ON), the Appalachians, Parc national de la Gaspesie, Kentucky, Great Lakes, and Vancouver Island; some notes were taken from Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources files.

File consists of note cards created by Hynes. It appears there are three sets of cards: first, a set of notes from the literature on stoneflies organized by author's name and containing the article publication date as well as point-form notes by Hynes; second, a similar set of notes but pertaining specifically to Tasmanian stoneflies; and third, a set of index cards containing records of the fauna under study by Hynes found in the streams and rivers of the counties and vice-counties of the British Isles.

Pollution reports (file 2 of 2).

File consists of material relating to the pollution of rivers in England and Wales, and mainly includes reports on biological surveys of rivers by Hynes and other researchers. Also present are some ms. field notes and maps. Rivers surveyed are: River Lea (or Lee) (1946-1954), River Mole (1963), River Derwent (1952-1957), River Dee (1952-1959), River Lune (1961), and Backgill Burn and Smallhope Burn (1960-1963). The surveys were conducted at the request of various town councils and clerks as well as mining and chemical comapnies.

File consists of material relating to Hynes' research in Ethiopia and the process of publishing a paper on this research, about benthic fauna of Ethiopian high-altitude streams and rivers, with Arthur Harrison. Includes incoming and outgoing correspondence, ms. and ts. research notes (including notes from the literature), draft reports, and a small amount of photocopied material.
