General note

71-11-33_001 appeared on Page 2 of the Wednesday, December 1, 1971 (v.12, n.13) edition of the Gazette as part of the article "Writes history of Indians."

General note

Photo caption from published version of 71-11-33_001: "PRESENTATION. Presentation of specially bound volume of his new book "The Canadian Indian, a History since 1500" to Prof E Palmer Patterson, History, is seen above. Participants included (L-R): Ed Mathieson and (partly hidden) Robert Dingman, of Collier-Macmillan Canada Ltd., President Matthews and Prof. Patterson. Presentation took place in UW Bookstore, Nov. 25."

General note

"Indian" is an outdated term used historically to refer to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada which many find offensive. The use of the term in the photo caption has been maintained in keeping with Special Collections & Archives’ approach to language in archival descriptions, which prioritizes speaking openly about and clearly identifying problematic, harmful, and otherwise offensive records in the department’s holdings. This approach, while potentially upsetting, allows for the critical assessment and questioning of historical material by contemporary researchers.
