Photo caption from published version of 71-04-06_009: "COMPUTERIZED TOASTER? Gadget above is new device in Computing Centre enabling faculty and graduate students to determine stage of processing of their "jobs" (programs) in the computer. T-SCAN, which looks like a large toaster, is located in the main I/O room, Mathematics and Computer Building."

71-04-06_007 appeared in a loose photo album part of the Dr. Donald Dr. Cowan fonds [GA165-8-167] with the following caption: " KEYPUNCHED CARDS. At the University of Waterloo, most programmes are submitted to the computer on keypunched cards. Normally, each instruction is keypunched on a single card so that a deck of cards represents the programme. Facilities for punching cards are located in rooms adjacent to the programme preparation rooms." A link to the description of the photo album is provided in the Related Materials field.

71-04-06_008 appeared in a loose photo album part of the Dr. Donald Dr. Cowan fonds [GA165-8-167] with the following caption: "CARD READER. Once the programme is punched on cards, the card deck is read by a card reader which decodes the pattern of holes in the cards. The card reader reads up to 1,000 cards per minute and transfers the information in the form of electrical impulses to the computer."
