Alice Munro/Walter Martin reference materials.

The collection consists primarily of photocopied material used and annotated by Dr. Walter Martin for his book Alice Munro: Paradox and Parallel published in 1987 by the University of Alberta Press. This includes articles written by Alice Munro, short stories, interviews, biographical and critical articles, as well as paperback copies of her books. Also present is a photocopied proof copy of of Moons of Jupiter, a collection of short stories by A. Munro published by Macmillan of Canada in 1982, sent to Dr. Martin by Douglas Gibson of Macmillan. Additional material includes audio recordings of Alice Munro reading her own works and of an interview done with her by Peter Gzowski for “This Country in the Morning.”

Also includes two audio cassettes featuring a recording of the salute to Joseph Orr Connell on his retirement from the YMCA in May 1976 and one audio cassette containing a recording of remarks given by Charles Greb at the opening of a new Waterloo Family YMCA on June 10, 1971.

Joseph Connell draft speeches.

Draft speech notes written by Joseph Orr Connell on envelopes, dated 1963 to 1966. The notes outline topics ranging from youth in modern society, changes and trends in society, women, and world peace. Also includes a speech, written in French, which expressed Joseph Connell’s gratitude to the Industrial Accident Prevention Association of Quebec, dated April 4, 1963. Also includes a photocopy of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra concert program from Wednesday, November 12, 1952. Joseph Connell, as YMCA Secretary, was listed as a speaker providing remarks of appreciation during the concert. The program contains an assortment of ads from local businesses and companies such as salons, insurance companies, and furniture stores.

Side 1 and 2; a recording of a presentation given by Margaret Catley-Carlson, President of the Canadian International Development Agency at the annual meeting of the YMCA’s of Canada held in Halifax, Nova Scotia on June 16, 1984. This presentation was part of plenary session V and discussed the power and potential of the voluntary sector in humanitarian efforts and shortfalls of the current government. Additionally, she talked about the power of organizations like the YMCA to respond to change and confront the dangers of nuclear war, threats to the environment, and the continuing problem of world poverty. Some parts of Margaret Catley-Carlson’s speech were delivered in French.

Side 1; a recording of a speech given by Rix Rogers, Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Council, YMCA during the annual meeting of the YMCA’s of Canada held in Halifax, Nova Scotia on June 16, 1984. During his speech, Rix Rogers discussed the contributions of YMCA staff and a report of the year’s activities in each service area: field services, government relations, program development, international development, Geneva Park located in Orillia, Ontario, and administrative services. Additionally, he commented on the coordination, resources and information management systems needed at the YMCA.

Two audio cassettes containing a recording of the salute to Joseph Orr Connell on his retirement from the YMCA in May 1976. Presentations during the salute included opening remarks, a history of Joseph Connell’s time served in the YMCA, speeches by friends and YMCA members about Joseph Connell’s impact and legacy on the YMCA locally and nationally.

Side 1; a recording of a speech given by Charles E. Greb on the opening of a new Waterloo YMCA on June 10, 1971. His speech discussed the history and background of the YMCA in the Kitchener-Waterloo region and its transition to being a family-orientated organization.

Side 2; a recording of closing remarks presented by Charles Greb at the annual meeting of the YMCA’s of Canada held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on June 16, 1984. At the time, Charles Greb was at the end of his two-year terms as Chairman of the National Council of YMCA’s of Canada. His speech focused on the YMCA’s global endeavours. There is a clearer duplicate of the recording in File 2: YMCA 27.

Fonds consists of the records of the Canadian Coalition on Acid Rain documenting all aspects of its activities and operations during its 10-year existence from 1981-1991. These include correspondence, minutes and reports, research files, financial records, legal records, publications, ephemera, audio-visual material, realia, and other material created or received by the CCAR and CAPF in the course of their business, and constitute a study in Canada-U.S. environmental relations.

Fonds consists of textual and visual materials created and received by Dorney over the course of his career, including drafts and reprints of most of his published writings, teaching and course materials, audio-visual materials, framed items, ephemera and realia. Of interest is an original map by Dorney which attempts to reconstruct the original vegetation patterns in North Dumfries Township in Waterloo County in the 19th century. Dorney's collection of slides is particularly significant in its documentation of natural vegetation, urban impact and areas of ecological interest both locally and elsewhere and includes extensive documentation of the "mini-forest" at his home at 124 Amos Ave. in Waterloo.

Ecoplans Ltd.

Series consists of materials created and accumulate by Ecoplans Ltd., a company formed by Dorney in 1970. Dorney was president until 1979 and then Chairman of the Board. Major projects of Ecoplans included urban forestry, water quality and environmental design as well as numerous highway and pipeline projects for the Province of Ontario. Approximately 100 plans were completed between 1970 and 1987 in which Dorney was able to "explore and demonstrate how environmentally science can be the basis of rational, less costly and pleasing development." Series contains publications and drafts of plans and projects undertaken by Ecoplans as well as some working and personal materials.
