McBryde also served as the Chairman of the Department of Chemistry between 1960-1963 and 1971-1977, and briefly as Chairman of the Department of Biology between 1960[?]-1963. McBryde retired in 1986.

He became the first employee of the Ontario University Athletic Association, pioneered sports information networks throughout Canada, initiated the CIAU Top Ten Rankings, and was a founding member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches of Canada. Paul also served on the University of Waterloo Board of Governors and was the President of the University of Waterloo Staff Association. He retired in 1996.
