History

Earl W. Stieler was an accountant and the former technical director of the Theatre of the Arts and Humanities Theatre, and an administrator of the University of Waterloo Art Gallery.

Stieler was born and raised in Kitchener-Waterloo. After graduating from Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate Institute (now Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School), he studied at Eueler Business College, the University of Waterloo, and the American Floral Art School in Chicago, Illinois. He also served in the medical unit of the Scots Fusiliers of Canada.

After working as an account for several years with B.F. Goodrich Rubber Company and active involvement in the local theatre community, Stieler joined the University of Waterloo as the technical director for the Theatre of the Arts. By the time he retired in 1991, he had held multiple positions including technical director for the Humanities Theatre and administration of the University of Waterloo Art Gallery when it was located in Modern Languages in the Theatre of the Arts lobby, before becoming the gallery's director. In addition to his technical and managerial roles, Stieler designed and painted sets for campus productions, and designed multiple floral arrangements and floats used in University events and parades. He also designed for other organizations including Wilfrid Laurier University, K-W Musical Productions, Gilbert and Sullivan Society, K-W Symphony, and Oktoberfest, among others.

Stieler died at the age 94 of cancer at the Grand River Hospital in Kitchener.
