Muskoka Lakes Association: Minute Book, 1894-1910.

File consists of an untitled ms. volume containing minutes of the annual and general meetings starting with the first organizational meeting of Feb. 19, 1894. This was considered the 1st annual meeting. Annual meeting minutes are present for the years 1894, 1895, 1896, [1897], 1898, [1899], [1900],1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1910.

Other minutes: Regatta Committee, 1894, Cottagers' Committee, 1896, as well as two leaves containing a list of prizes (medallions, etc.) with prices.

The volume also contains loose inserts:
1a) Minutes, Cottagers' Committee, Dec. 26, 1895,
1b) Telegram from the King, Aug. 6, 1906,
1c) certificates of measurement, undated, for named boats, signed Jno Rogers, Official Measurer.

Includes annual meeting minutes for the years 1894-1924, 1926-1928, some with Executive Committee reports; Executive Committee minutes for 1922-1926; Regatta Committee minutes for 1894; Cottagers' Committee minutes for 1896; a telegram from the King (1906); and undated certificates of measurement for named boats. All documents are photocopies.

Half-bound in leather and green paper sides; marbled endpapers. Book probably created to commemorate the centennial of the association.

Annual Meetings and Committee Minutes

Series consists of records relating to the administration and activities of the Muskoka Lakes Association, and in particular the annual meetings, meetings of the executive committee, and meetings of association directors. The records demonstrate the concern for and activity surrounding the MLA's involvement in issues affecting the environment and the quality of life in the Muskokas and address such topics as water quality, acid rain, planning and land use, water levels, taxation, etc. Series includes minutes for the annual meeting of the MLA (1894-1947), meetings of the executive committee (1972-1980), and meetings of association directors (1980-1986), as well as attachments and supporting documents including agendas, financial statements, budgets, association newsletters, correspondence, lists of board members, reports, surveys and questionnaires, minutes of board sub-committees, ephemera, photocopied clippings, etc.

Series consists of artifacts, primarily relating to the Muskoka Lakes Association's annual regattas. Includes medallions, ribbons, flags, signs, plaques, t-shirts, and sweatshirts.

File consists of correspondence to Ewart McLaughlin, as well as one outgoing letter and carbon copies of letters to other recipients. Also included is a motor boat races schedule (undated). Letters relate to boating and to the MLA regatta and motor boat races. McLaughlin was possibly on the Regatta Committee.

Series consists of material relating to the 100th anniversary of the MLA in 1994 and the centennial celebrations held during that year. Includes commemorative books produced by the association, ephemera, correspondence, photocopied material on the history of the association, and other material.

Muskoka Lakes Association fonds : 2006 accrual.

Accrual consists of material documenting aspects of the administration and activities of the Muskoka Lakes Association and some of its committees, mainly during the period from 1978 to 2003. During this time, the primary political and environmental concerns of the association included land use and resort development, taxation, water quality, and relationships with municipal and provincial governments.

Accrual contains records created and accumulated by chairs of political, environmental, and land use committees and by several presidents, as well as records relating to office administration and other committees and activities of the association.

Includes correspondence and memoranda; reports; presentations; committee minutes and agendas; newspaper clippings; publications; handwritten and typed notes; notices and decisions of provincial judicial boards; official plans, by-laws and other municipal documents; maps and architectural drawings; ephemera; and other material.

Series consists of records relating to the work of several MLA committees. Most records relate to the Regatta Committee and the planning, organization, and results of the annual sailing and aquatic regattas (1930-1932, 1965-1986). Series also includes one file each for the Antique Boat Committee (1978), the Election Committee (1979-1989), and the Recreational Safety Committee 1985-1986).

Includes correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes and agendas, handwritten and typed notes, reports, budgets, invoices, regatta results charts, regatta flyers and programs, newspaper clippings, and other material.

File consists of material found inside the commemorative volume containing a record of events held during the centennial year. Includes a typed draft of the book's colophon, an invitation to the centennial day celebration, a photograph of the association office in the winter, and two red regatta ribbons.

Administration : Office Files

Series consists of material created and accumulated in the course of the administration and operation of the MLA office in Port Carling and the role of the office in supporting the work of the association executive and committee members. Some of the files were created and maintained by Kathy Aitken, Executive Director from 1997 to 1999, and other files were possibly created and maintained by Cheryl Hallows, bookkeeper from 1996 to 1999 and Executive Assistant from 1999 to [200-], and Cheryl Watt, office assistant from 1999.

Material relates to property assessment and taxation and the group appeal to the Assessment Review Board launched by the MLA, the activities of the Political Portfolio and Safety Portfolio, as well as various other issues and events including crime and policing, safe boating, municipal elections, the antique boat show and an annual general meeting.

Includes correspondence and memoranda (some drafts), photocopied newspaper clippings, reports and presentations, lists of MLA members and roll numbers, meeting agendas and minutes, typed and handwritten notes, financial statements for 1988 and 1989, posters, photographs, a handbook, and other material.

Series consists of newspaper clippings collected by Michael Vaughan during his involvement with the MLA as a member and then chair of the Committee on Land Use, Taxation, and Highways (1969-1982); and then as vice-president (1982-1984) and president (1984-1986) of the association.

Clippings relate to the activities of and issues of interest to the MLA. Includes clippings from newspapers in the Muskoka region and some clippings from Toronto or national newspapers. Some clippings are photocopies, and some include memoranda or annotations for or by Vaughan.

President's Files : Michael Vaughan

Series consists of the working files of Michael Vaughan containing material created, accumulated and used by Vaughan during his involvement with the MLA from 1969 to 1986. Records relate mainly to his role as member (1969-1975), vice-chair (1975-1977), chair (1977-1982), and past chair (1982-1984) of the Committee on Land Use, Taxation, and Highways; and as vice-president (1982-1984) and president (1984-1986) of the association.

Series also includes records relating to various other committees, issues, and events. The Committee on Land Use, Taxation, and Highways was responsible for examining and responding to town planning, development, and other land use issues in the Muskoka region. One of the developments of major concern during Vaughan's tenure as chair was a proposed resort at the Roseneath property on Beaumaris Island, and several files in this series relate to this issue.

Series includes correspondence, memoranda, reports, studies, presentations, meeting agendas and minutes, handwritten and typed notes, newspaper clippings, newsletters, agreements, maps and plans, and other material.

File consists of maps of the Muskoka region. Includes maps of Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, and Lake Joseph by the Canadian Hydrographic Service, Department of the Environment, Ottawa; the road system in the District Municipality of Muskoka by A.R. Ferguson, Gravenhurst; and 6 blueline prints of topographical maps of the Humphrey, Medora, Wood, Muskoka, Monck, and Watt townships in Muskoka by the Ontario Forestry Branch, Perry Sound (1933-1942). Material probably collected by Michael Vaughan.

File consists of Secretary-Treasurer and President's papers and correspondence. Includes correspondence to and from C. Ewart Mclaughlin, J. Alex Greig, Lorne Davidson, bulletins, lists, financial documents, etc. Topics include memberships, regatta announcements and results, caterpillar infestation in 1951, history of the area, 1939 correspondence re "needle blight" on white pine, lake levels and fish stocking.
