Toronto : architecture : miscellaneous.

Materials in this file relate primarily to Toronto's architectural history. This includes materials relating to professional work which Dendy carried out in his capacity as architectural historian including the Heath Park project and a significance report re Belleville City Hall. Some other materials relate to the reprint of Lost Toronto in the early 1990's. Materials include news clippings, photocopies of journal articles and of extracts from books and other publications, ms. notes, reports, and some correspondence addressed to Dendy or sent by Dendy.

Also includes photocopies of architectural drawings and plans, as well as of illustrations, maps, and photographs. A small number of b&w 8" x 10" photographs depicting Eaton's, College Street, are also contained in this file. A photocopied ts. list of the inventory of the Douglas Kertland Architectural Drawings Collection is addtionally among the items in this file.

Includes ms. holograph notes re Toronto architecture from 1830's up to 1890's. Also contains a photocopy from Robertson's Landmarks of Toronto: A Collection of Historical Sketches of the Old Town of York: from 1792 until 1833: and of Toronto from 1834 to 1893.

Includes planning information sheets for those buildings embraced by the Planning Board Projects of Metro Toronto, of the City of Toronto, of North York, Scarborough and the Township of Etobicoke. Also includes index cards containing details of Toronto buildings including location, date, and name of architect(s). This file also includes several photocopied articles from The Canadian Architect dating from the late 1950's. A photocopy of a book re the history of the Village of Parkdale, 1879-1979 is also among the items in this file. Finally, ms. holograph notes and some ephemera are also included among the items in this file.

Contains material relating to Toronto's architecture and architects. Includes issues of periodicals, photocopies of journal articles (including an article by William Kilbourn), clippings, photocopies of photographs of buildings, ms. notes by Dendy, and photocopies of bibliographies. Additionally contains promotional literature from many Toronto-based architectural firms.

Other items include ts. research notes and research papers by Stephen Otto primarily re various architects including John Tully, Henry Bowyer Lane, John Harlock Elliot, Cyrus Pole Thomas and William Beaumont Leather. This file also contains photocopied documents (primarily correspondence) received by Dendy from the Archives at the Dalhousie University Library. These documents relate to Frank Darling.

Includes list of map holdings in the map library and in the rare book library at the University of Toronto. Also contains photocopies of maps of different areas of Toronto obtained from these libraries. File dividers separate the maps contained in this file into separate sections according to the year to which they pertain. These years are as follows: 1880, 1884, 1890, 1893, 1903, and 1923.

Materials in this file relate primarily to Toronto's architecture. Materials include news clippings, ms. notes, a walking guide, the prospectus of a Toronto-based architectural firm, a calendar entitled "Our Toronto Calendar 1975", and issues of magazines.

Other items include research papers and essays written by Dendy's students at the University of Toronto. One paper relates to St. James Town while another relates to the Park System in Toronto. An information package re the City of Toronto's New Urban Design Awards (1992) is also included in this file, in addition to a media information package, photographs, and other materials relating to the Toronto Dome Stadium.

Includes books, booklets, pamphlets, issues of journals, photocopies of journal articles, and folded flyers re historic buildings and sites in Toronto, re the history of Toronto or areas of Toronto, and re architectural developments in Toronto. Additionally includes guides and catalogues of art and/or of architectural exhibitions in Toronto. Other publications include a catalogue of the manuscript collection of the Toronto Board of Education.

Some correspondence (dated 1990) is also contained in this file and relates to discussions by the Neighbourhoods Committee of the Toronto Historical Board re the inclusion on the Inventory of Heritage Properties of 500 Lake Shore Blvd. W.

All of these materials cover the Toronto area and take the form of either originals or photocopies. Includes many ms. and ts. (original and computer output) notes by Dendy prepared for the purposes of Toronto Walking Tours which were given by him. Each set of notes relates to a different area of Toronto. Other items include Toronto walking tour guides produced by the North Toronto Historical Society, the Central Y.M.C.A., Toronto, and other bodies. Photocopies from books and clippings re certain areas of Toronto are also contained in this file. Additionally this file includes maps of many different areas of Toronto, as well as many brochures and leaflets relating primarily to walking tours of different areas of Toronto.

These materials are divided into separate file folders according to the building, street, or area of Toronto to which they relate. While some of these materials constitute Dendy's research for walking tours of Toronto, other materials (especially photographs and manuscripts) were used or prepared for the revised edition of Lost Toronto which was published in 1993.

Includes maps of regions and cities within Canada and the U.S.A. Additionally includes tourist guides to historic buildings and sites both within Canada and the U.S.A., as well as guides to gallery and museum exhibitions. Also includes a publication entitled York Minster and its Problems and another publication which focuses on the architecture of New York city.

United States : guides and brochures.

Materials contained in this file were collected by Dendy when he lived in the U.S.A or was visiting the U.S.A. They include maps, and many tourist guides in the form of pamphlets, folded flyers, and brochures. Many of these take the form of guides to museum and gallery exhibitions, while others take the form of walking tour guides or guides to historic buildings or regions within the U.S.A.

In particular guides to different areas of Chicago issued by the Commission on Chicago Historical and Architectural Landmarks are contained in this file. Other items include postcards, col. photographs, as well as clippings and issues of journals which relate primarily to the theme of architecture and/or art in certain areas of the U.S.A.

Includes degree certificates awarded to Dendy including a Degree of Bachelor of Arts (1976) and a Master of Arts (1979) from St. John's College in the University of Cambridge. Additionally, includes a photograph which shows Dendy receiving a degree or an award at unidenfitied ceremony or event.

Another photograph appears to depict students and staff in the school of architecture at Massey College, University of Toronto (1979-1980). Dendy was one of the staff members in this year and he is among the individuals in this photograph. All members in this photograph are identified in an accompanying list.

Finally, this file contains a photograph depicting a group of people who Dendy may have worked or studied with. The occasion on which this photograph was taken and the individuals in this photograph are, however, not identified.
