Contact sheets (both originals and photocopies), numbered on the verso. The numbers correspond to shhets of negatives in files 439-441. These photographs were taken in the process of researching for Toronto Observed and for walking tours of Toronto given by Dendy.

This file also includes a small number of photographic negatives (both 35 mm and large format negatives) which depict the exterior of Toronto buildings in addition to the interiors of an unidentified historic home.

Includes ms. holograph notes containing Dendy's research on Toronto architecture from the Toronto newspaper The Globe during the period 1860-1865. For each year during this period these materials are divided into two separate sections: 1. Miscellaneous; 2. Tenders. This file also contains photocopies from books, journals and other publications re architects (Henry Bowyer Lane and William Hay) and architectural developments in Toronto in the mid-nineteenth century. Also includes some items of correspondence re Dendy's research into this period of architectural history.

Canadian architecture : reading notes.

Includes research papers by Dendy and others re various architectural themes. One research paper by Stephen Otto relates to the architect F. J. Rastrick. Another photocopied draft ts. by Jim Lemon and Stephen Speisman is entitled "The Building of a Suburb" and relates to the history of Toronto architecture, while a second draft ts. (original) by Dendy is entitled "Temples of Commerce: From the First Canadian Bank to the Second World War". Both of these ts. drafts appear to constitute research conducted to constitute part of a book or books on architecture. Other items included in this file include ms. holograph notes and photocopies of articles relating to bank building, Frederick Rastrick, city planning in Toronto and other matters.

Includes draft tss. (originals and photocopies) with holograph corrections of different sections written for a work intended for publication and entitled Concise History of Architecture in Canada. One draft ts. was originally stored in a ring binder and is marked as comprising chapters written by Dendy, as well as chapters on Quebec by other authors. The remaining draft tss. are loose leaf copies by Dendy.
Additionally includes two clippings re Ottawa's new National Gallery (1988).

Research: Card Files

Series consists of the detailed hand-written card files prepared by Dendy as a guide to research materials available in his fields of interest in the subject area of Architectural History.
These card files provide different types of information:

  • Bibliographic references to materials in a number of subject areas. This includes special interest topics of Dendy's such as Frank Darling's library and the Massey Patronay. Additionally, an A-Z index of architects (mostly Canadian) is also available. This features bibliographic references to journal articles where information on each architect can be found. In some cases these cards also provide information on the office or home address of these architects.
  • Building permit information for Canada (mainly Toronto) for late nineteenth century or early twentieth century. This includes building permit no. and year, address of building, description of building, and name of architect. This information is organized either by architect, by date, or by street or region. However, in some cases no apparent order applies.
  • Alphabetical index to architects. Information provided on these card files includes the name of the building, address of the building, and year of construction of the building designed by each architect listed. In some cases a brief description of the building is also provided in additin to a bibliographic reference to the source from which information on the building was obtained. Most of the buildings listed in this index were designed in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.
  • Architect and subject index. Card files are filed alphabetically by name of architect, author name, publication title, or architectural topic. These cards take the form of bibliographic references to publications.
  • Subject indexes. This includes an alphabetical subject index to various Canadian and foreign architectural topics, as well as a subject index relating specifically to the history of Toronto's architecture.
  • Miscellaneous card files. Some small sections of card files can also be found which relate to various topics and which are organized in different ways. This includes an index of designs (pencil drawings, prints, and photographs) for buildings in Toronto and other parts of Ontario, an index to topics relating to foreign architecture, and miscellaneous card files re Toronto architecture.

Includes photocopies from The White Pine Series of Architectural Monographs. This is a "bi-monthly publication suggesting the architectural uses of white pine and its availability today as a structural wood". Included in this file are photocopies of this publication from 1916-1923.

Contains loose untitled materials in the form of clippings re Canadian and U.S. architects including Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg, Donald McKay, and Henry-Russell Hitchcock. These clippings also focus on architectural developments in Toronto and elsewhere. Also includes a clipping (1990) re Africville, a black settlement in the Maritime provinces. Another clipping focuses on an exhibition of the art works of Wiitasalo and Daniels at the Art Gallery of York University in 1993.

These videocassettes include programs re the architectural history of Toronto shown on CBLT MORNING. Dendy was a regular contributor in the fields of architecture and architechtural history for CBLT MORNING between 1985-1986.

The first program (ca. 10 mins. in duration) is entitled "Lost Horizons" and focuses on the history of the development of high rise buildings in Toronto especially commercial architecture. Dendy provides extensive commentary during this program.

The second item (about 5-10 minutes in duration) forms part of a program re Wytchwood Park which also includes commentary by Dendy re the architectural history of this neighbourhood.

These two pieces of film footage are repeated multiple times on each of these two videocassettes.

Includes originals and photocopies of an article about Dendy by Adele Freedman which appeared in The Globe and Mail on Sept. 14, 1991. Additionally includes photocopy of a clipping (1988?) which appeared in The Toronto Star which focused on Dendy's career as an architectural historian.
This file also includes a photocopy of a review of Toronto Observed: Its Architecture, Patrons, and History by Dendy and Kilbourn. This appeared in Books in Canada in May 1987. Invitations to the launching event for this publication from Oxford University Press in association with Ballenford Books are also among the items included in this file.

Finally this file includes a folded flyer listing the winners of the City of Toronto Book Awards in the period 1974-1991.Lost Toronto received this award in 1979, while Toronto Observed: Its Architecture, Patrons and History received this award in 1987.The program produced for the City of Toronto's Civic Honours Day 1979 is also included in this file. City of Toronto Book awards were presented to William Dendy and other authors as part of this program.

Contains untitled loose materials. This includes a copy of the proposal Dendy wrote for an exhibition on the Canadian Home and its Furnishings over the period 1945-1967. Other materials in this file include research materials which Dendy received from the archives of the University of British Columbia re work which he was carrying out in preparation for this proposed exhibition. These research materials take the form of copies of inventories of materials in the Melva Dwyer collection, the Binning Manuscript collection, and the collection of the Council of Forest Industries of B.C. at the archives of the University of British Columbia.
