Each file also contains a document created by Shipley identifying the people and places mentioned in the journal.

The diary documents the first part of Catharine's first trip to Germany in 1888. The early correspondence provides further documentation of the establishment of Louis Breithaupt's tanning business in Berlin, Ontario; the later correspondence is primarily from her children, including her nephew Louis Henry Wagner.
