History
Dr. Roger Downer was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biology at the University of Waterloo. He began teaching at the university in 1969 as a lecturer and was promoted to professor in 1981.
Dr. Downer served as the chair of the Biology Department from 1986 to 1989, and as acting Dean of the Faculty of Science in 1989. In 1989 he was named Vice-President, University Development. The position was renamed Vice-President, University Relations in 1990. He also served as advisor to the Vice-President, Academic for the University’s research institutes, centres and groups.
Dr. Downer served on the Biological Council of Canada and was the president of the Canadian Society of Zoologists, the Director of the Entomological Societies of Ontario and Canada, and the Director of the Huntsman Marine Biology Lab.
He received the FEJ Fry Medal of the Canadian Society of Zoologists in 1990, a Gold Medal from the Entomological Society of Canada in 1991, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1992. In 1982 he received the Distinguished Teacher Award.
Dr. Downer retired from the University of Waterloo in 1996. He then served as the President of the University of Limerick in Ireland from 1998 until 2006.
