General note
The official opening of the Campus Centre expansion took place on March 27, 1995 and was marked by a ceremony celebrating both the completion of the project and the building’s new name, the Student Life Centre. The event featured a presidential welcome, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, cake cutting, a balloon drop, and the formal announcement of the new name. Celebrations continued throughout the following week with games, club demonstrations, business promotions, a coffee house, a movie marathon, an art show, an exhibition of historical photographs, a time capsule collection, and Class of ’95 activities, culminating in a second ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception on April 4 with members of the Board of Governors.
The expansion was a $6.6 million project funded through a cooperative effort between the University of Waterloo and the Federation of Students, with undergraduate students contributing $5.5 million toward its cost. The expansion added new facilities for student organizations and businesses, expanded meeting and club space, and introduced services and amenities including a pharmacy, variety store, physiotherapy clinic, Bell phone centre, game room, bike compound, and the Marketplace restaurant.
