Prior to the naming ceremony, the auditorium was known as room 1621 and was built in 1996 as part of a $2.45 million expansion at BC Matthews Hall. The Faculty of Applied Health Sciences was then located in BC Matthews Hall. The new name recognized the financial support from The Mutual Group. Speakers at the ceremony included Robert Astley, president of the Mutual Group, University of Waterloo president James Downey and Dean of Applied Health Sciences Mike Sharratt. - Information via Daily Bulletin published September 24, 1998
