Photographic negatives contained in numbered transparent holders. Contains some photocopies of numbered contact sheets. The buildings depicted in these photographs are individually identified on many of the contact sheets. The photographic images in this file depict Toronto buildings and appear to have been taken for the purposes of Dendy's walking tours. They may also have been taken in the process of researching and gathering materials for the publication Lost Toronto.

Series consists of manuscripts and galley proofs prepared for publications and other research reports and papers by Dendy.
This includes a photocopy of a preliminary report, which Dendy wrote for the National Historic Sites Service in Ottawa re the 1968 Archaelogical Excavations Conducted at Fort Beausejour National Historic Park, Aulac, New Brunswick. It also includes a ts. draft of a research paper presented by Dendy entitled "The Background of Modernism in Toronto". Finally, Series consists of several sections of the galley proofs prepared for the revised and expanded edition of Lost Toronto which was published in 1993, in addition to a list of the photographs used in the first edition of this work (1978).

Other publications include a catalogue of the manuscript collection of the Toronto Board of Education.

Some correspondence (dated 1990) is also contained in this file and relates to discussions by the Neighbourhoods Committee of the Toronto Historical Board re the inclusion on the Inventory of Heritage Properties of 500 Lake Shore Blvd. W.

Also included in this file are some reviews of the book Dendy co-published with William Kilbourn entitled Toronto Observed: Its Architecture, Patrons, and History.

File also includes several news clippings, one of which features the architect Ernest Cormier, and the other of which focuses on architecture in Montreal. Finally, this file includes an agenda paper by Mathilde Brosseau of the CIHB staff entitled "Second Group of Grand Trunk Railway Stations: Original Eastern Sections and Stations from c.1870 to c.1920".

Other items include a tourist guide entitled "Hunter's Panoramic Guide from Niagara to Quebec" (originally published in 1857), a publication on the early history of the township of Erin, and a pamphlet re historical maps of Canada. Finally this file contains various publications on Canadian architecture.

Additionally includes a section from The Toronto Star , 25 March 1989, entitled "New in Homes", as well as a publication of the Canadian Housing Information Centre (1991) listing the external research program reports published by this centre.

These materials include the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree certificates received by Dendy in the 1970's from the University of Cambridge where he studied Architectural History as well as clippings, ephemera and portraits.

Contains books, issues of journals and magazines, and clippings re suburban housing design (predominantly in the 1960's) in Canada and the U.S.A. Much of this material relates specifically to small home design. Authors of this materials include the Canadian Housing Design Council and the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation of Canada.

Includes one photocopy of b&w protrait photograph of Dendy as a very young man. A second b&w portrait photograph of Dendy was taken by Hodgskiss Studios in Apr. 1976. The third b&w portrait photograph of Dendy appears in his passport, which was issued in 1981, and is also among the items included in this file.

Advertising brochures : US/Can/British, mostly concerned with housing.

Contains materials primarily in the form of manufacturers' catalogues (dating from 1920's-1940's) re housing design and garden and greenhouse design. One publication was issued by the Ladies Home Journal and relates to bungalow design in the period pre World War II. Another item takes the form of a scrapbook compiled by Mary Eleanore Westley between 1921 and 1924 which includes clippings from magazines. These take the form of illustrations showing both exterior and interior home designs which were typical for the period. Manufacturers' catalogues include listings of home appliances, bathroom designs, greenhouse designs, and of roofing materials respectively.
One clipping (1989) contained in this file relates to plans for the new General Electric Building which is to be constructed using plastics along with other building materials.

Fonds consists of materials documenting William Dendy's life and career as an architectural historian including university course notes, research material for published works, research material on the history of Canadian architecture and other research interests such as Forest Hill, Hamilton, the architects Frank Darling and William Somerville, and the Massey family. Some materials relate to Dendy's teaching activities, Toronto walking tours and consultancy projects.

Also present are articles, card files, clippings, correspondence, electronic records, ephemera, manuscripts, maps, manuscript and typescript notes, as well as photographs, negatives, and approximately 40,000 slides (including more than 17,000 images of Canadian architecture, urban space, and landscape). The slides were taken by Dendy and are each individually identified by him.
