Exhibit clippings

Series contains clippings documenting memorial exhibits for Homer Watson and articles reviewing his life. There are two scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings between 1936 and 1947. One scrapbook contains mostly newspaper memorabilia and exhibition advertisements, while the other contains clippings focused mainly on announcing exhibits throughout Ontario along with press and editorial comments. There are also files of clippings that discuss the closure of Watson’s art gallery and studio in 1947. One of the clippings is a print, from a magazine, depicting Homer Watson.

Series documents John Walter’s correspondence with William Daum Euler and the Kitchener Daily Record. The correspondence focus on Walter’s request for a public debate with Euler over capitalism and the economy. Other correspondence and newspaper clippings cover the Record’s refusal to publish, in their newspaper, the letters Walter sent about challenging Euler. There are also clippings of Euler's speech which Walter references in his letters.

Series consists of the working files of Michael Vaughan containing material created, accumulated and used by Vaughan during his involvement with the MLA from 1969 to 1986. Records relate mainly to his role as member (1969-1975), vice-chair (1975-1977), chair (1977-1982), and past chair (1982-1984) of the Committee on Land Use, Taxation, and Highways; and as vice-president (1982-1984) and president (1984-1986) of the association.

Series also includes records relating to various other committees, issues, and events. The Committee on Land Use, Taxation, and Highways was responsible for examining and responding to town planning, development, and other land use issues in the Muskoka region. One of the developments of major concern during Vaughan's tenure as chair was a proposed resort at the Roseneath property on Beaumaris Island, and several files in this series relate to this issue.

Series documents anti-war and anti-fascist sentiments during the early 1930s. Includes various leaflets of poems and songs on peace by William E. Dyer, a Toronto-based poet. Other leaflets relate to the 1934 Ontario provincial election and promotion for the Socialist Party of Canada in the Waterloo North constituency There is also a membership advertisement for the “American League against War and Fascism”, based in New York, and a Pax International issue from 1934 about the persecution of pacifists and promotion of peace.

Series consists of files of photographs accumulated and used mainly by Robert Lovell in his role as Public Relations Manager (from 1963 to ca. 1988) for internal and external publicity purposes. Many photographs were taken for use in the company newsletters Sparks and Chips, Electrohome World, and Electrohome Update, and include markings for cropping and sizing.

Museum and Archives

Series consists of material relating to the development, organization, and operation of a company museum and archives. The museum was originally established in 1967 as a centennial project and part of the 60th anniversary celebration, in order to display products produced by Electrohome since 1907. John Koegler was the company historian and museum curator.

The museum as well as the company archives were given renewed attention in preparation for the company's 90th anniversary and the production of a corporate history book in 1997. At that time, William McGregor (former vice-president of Electrohome) was involved museum administration, and Nicola McLaughlin was hired to research company history and process and manage the archives.

Series includes material relating to the day-to-day operation of the museum and archives, the collection and processing of items, and the recording of historical information. Series consists of 8mm and 16mm films accumulated by, and produced for the Grand River Conservation Authority. The majority of these films have been transferred to videocassette and DVD, which are also found in the GRCA fonds. Also contains masters and working prints of a number of films produced for the Grand River Conservation Authority by Summit Film Productions. These films depict scenes along the Lower, Mid and Upper Grand; dam construction outside Guelph, Ontario; GRCA conservation areas; and also contain footage of Grand River flooding.

Series consists of DVD transfers from original films and videocassettes, several of which were acquired by the GRCA from donors. Includes transfers of original films made by Hugh Templin, a GRCA commissioner. During the 1940s, Templin took footage of the construction phases of the Shand Dam, near Belwood, Ont. and its subsequent opening and early operation. DVD transfers of slide-show presentations of Grand River Conservation Authority Annual Reports, and Special Recognition Awards.

Includes annual production reports from 1933 to 1955, sales reports from 1932-1964, records of special orders, government contracts, memoranda, and cost accounting information.

Harvey J. Sims : Chicopee

Records relating to the Harvey J. Sims' development of Chicopee, a 45-acre estate near Kitchener, Ont., where he built a home designed by Forsey Page and Steele, Architects, and designed and landscaped the grounds with the help of Carl Borgstrom of Carl Borgstrom and H.M.S. Carver, Landscape Architects. He was instrumental in the reforestation of the contiguous properties in Chicopee Hills, and in only a few years planted on his property more than 700 varieties of trees and shrubs.
Includes correspondence to and from architects, landscape planners, nurseries, and government agencies concerning the development of Harvey's house and grounds, also the reforestation of the surrounding area, dated 1927 to 1941. The correspondence files described in this series are together as found. Harvey's Personal Business Files in Series 8 contain a great deal of supplementary material in the way of correspondence, invoices, lists, time sheets, etc., with seed houses, nurseries, companies, and individuals supplying material and furnishings for the home and grounds, from water heaters and wiring to billiard table lights.
Harvey was particularly interested in collecting as many native species of trees and shrubs as would grow in this climate and his collecting activities are documented by correspondence with arboreta, university horticulture departments, government nurseries, and government officials and employees who were at that time developing botanical garden plans in Hamilton and Niagara.

Records relating to Harvey J. Sims' development of a library of books at his Chicopee home, in which he was aided by Adam Strohm, Librarian at the Detroit Public Library and Charles R. Sanderson, Chief Librarian of the Toronto Public Library. Harvey turned his planned billiard room into a library instead and set about filling it with books. Although this series contains only two files, it represents a significant activity in Harvey's life.
