Collection consists of materials created and accumulated by Paul S. Burtness and Warren U. Ober relating to their research on the events surrounding the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II. Includes correspondence with prominent members of the U.S. Forces during World War II, as well as published articles that came out of the research.

Correspondence

Series is comprised of correspondence between Paul S. Burtness and Warren U. Ober and others, primarily military figures associated with the U.S. Forces during World War II, and in specific those who had knowledge of the event surrounding the attack on Pearl Harbor. The letters were received during the course of research by Burtness and Ober into the events of the attack on Pearl Harbor, which ultimately culminated in their book "The Puzzle of Pearl Harbor." Includes ms. and ts. letters from generals, admirals and lieutenants as well as a Pearl Harbor historian and the secretary to John F. Kenndy. File consists of eleven items of correspondence from Admiral Husband E. Kimmel and one photograph of a painted portrait of Kimmel. The letters are dated:

The letters discuss the events surrounding the attack on Pearl Harbor, the publication of books on the history of WWII, an interview with Kimmel, possible resources to consult and the publication of "The Puzzle of Pearl Harbor."

Stark, Harold R.

File consists of three items of correspondence between Burtness and Ober, and Admiral Harold R. Stark. The letters are dated May 31, 1961; September 11, 1962; and Ovtober 11, 1962. The first is a two leaf typed letter from Stark regarding a request from Burtness and Ober to interview him in the summer of 1961 in Washington. The second is a one page typed letter from Burtness and Ober thanking Stark for meeting with them and inquiring as to whether he received their book.

On the bottom and verso of the letter Stark has written a letter by hand in reply congratulating the two on their work.

File consists of three items of correspondence from Admiral Thomas C. Hart. The first (typed, 1 leaf) is dated August 5, 1962, the second (typed, 1 leaf) is dated September 21, 1962 and the third (typed, 1 leaf) is dated December 29, 1962. All three letters discuss the events surrounding the attack on Pearl Harbor.

File consists of one item of correspondence (typed, 5 leaves) from Major General Sherman Miles to Burtness and Ober dated January 19, 1962. The letter is in response to one sent by Burtness and Ober and it gives information on the events surrounding the attack on Pearl Harbor and Miles' military career.

File consists of one item of correspondence (typed, 1 leaf) from Evelyn Lincoln, secretary to President Kennedy. The letter, written on behalf of the President, thanks Burtness and Ober for sending a copy of their book "The Puzzle of Pearl Harbor" and for their approval regarding Kennedy's handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

File consists of three items of correspondence from General Douglas MacArthur. The first (typed, 2 leaves) is dated August 6, 1962 and discusses the events surrounding the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The second (typed 1 leaf) is dated September 14, 1962 and and is in response to a question from Burtness and Ober regarding the "defensive information patrol." The third (typed, 1 leaf) is dated October 3, 1962 and is in response to questions posed by Burtness and Ober regarding the attack on Pearl Harbor.
