Correspondence and Information Files.

This series contains correspondence sent by or received by Mary Johnston as well as other administrative and legal documents maintained by her relating to the activities and affairs of the teachers' organizations of which she was a member. These include the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario, The Federation of Women Teachers' Associations of Ontario, the Waterloo County Board of Education, and the Waterloo County Women Teachers' Association.

This series also includes materials maintained by Mary Johnston when she worked for the Waterloo County Women Teachers' Association in various capacitites including Key Teacher, President of Unit 1, as a W.C.W.T.A. Past President, as the association's County Adviser and P.R., and as a member of the Book Project Committee.

Also included in this series is a file containing correspondence sent to parents by Mary Johnston when she worked with the Kindergarten at Brighton School.

Waterloo County Women Teachers' Association: Correspondence and Miscellaneous.

Contains correspondence and other materials all of which relate to the affairs, activities etc. of the W.C.W.T.A. Includes correspondence sent by and received by Mary Johnston. Some of this correspondence was sent or received in her capacity as a key teacher, as President of Unit 1, as a W.C.W.T.A. Past President, as the association's County Adviser, and as a member of the Book Project Committee.

Other materials in this file include ts. of W.C.W.T.A.'s comments on the Reville Report, a poem by Joyce Lodge (West Unit Executive Member) entitled "You Will Be There", an information sheet featuring an outline of the history of the W.C.W.T.A. Also includes agenda for W.C.W.T.A. executive retreat in 1990, as well as a list of W.C.W.T.A. priorities for 1997-1998. Additionally, contains lists of association executive members from 1996-1997, a list of women administrators for 1997-1998, and a list of honorary association members for 1997-1998.

Waterloo County Women Teachers' Association Celebrates F.W.T.A.O. Diamond Jubilee: Annual Meeting, 1978.

Contains president's report, minutes, treasurer's report, and committee reports. The documents for this meeting feature a special report announcing that Mary Johnston is the recipient of the W.C.W.T.A. and F.W.T.A.O. Diamond Jubilee Award and containing details of her achievements during her career. This award was given to commemorate the federation's sixtieth birthday
Also contained in this file are loose items including clippings (some duplicates) focusing on the receipt of this award by Mary Johnston. Also includes an issue of Accross the Board published by the Waterloo County Board of Education. This contains highlights of the board meeting of May 25, 1978 which includes an announcement that Mary Johnston has been awarded the F.W.T.A.O. Diamond Jubilee Award.

Also includes the report of the F.W.T.A.O. Director presented at this meeting, as well as the reports of the presidents of the individual W.C.W.T.A. units, committee reports, and the proposed budget.

Also includes lists of key teachers, and a list of retiring teachers to be honoured at this annual dinner celebration. A biographical note on each of these teachers can also be found in this file as well as a list of twenty-five year members.

Federation of Women Teachers' Associations of Ontario: Waterloo County Principals' Conferences.

Contains one spiral-bound volume and three booklets featuring summary reports of conference presentations and reproductions of photographs taken at the Waterloo County Principals' Conferences in 1975, 1979, 1980, and 1983. An additional spiral-bound volume for the conference of 1970 features full transcripts of conference presentations and some reproductions of photographs taken during this conference. This file also contains a leaflet produced by the Waterloo County Principals' Association to mark the association's 20th anniversary in 1989.

Contains miscellaneous materials relating to the W.C.W.T.A.'s leadership courses for the years: 1973-1974, 1975, 1977, 1982, 1983-1984, 1995, and 1997-1998. These include flyers, correspondence, course evaluation form, course handouts, as well as the certificate awarded to Mary Johnston in 1975 to affirm her participation in the leadership course in this year.

Ontario Teachers Strike to Oppose Anti-Strike Bill (Bill 274).

Contains news clippings which appeared in The Globe and Mail focusing on Ontario teachers' opposition to Bill 274 designed to prevent mass resignations submitted by teachers from taking effect on Dec. 31, 1973. This bill would instead impose compulsory arbitration to resolve disputed contract issues. Actions taken by teachers to oppose this bill included a province-wide strike on Dec. 18, 1973.

News clipping (Kitchener-Waterloo Record, Monday, 5 June 1972, p. 28) reports on a leadership workshop sponsored by the Federation of Women Teachers' Associations of Ontario. The names of teachers attending from Kitchener-Waterloo are provided along with information on the themes to be covered in the workshop sessions.

Contains editorial (Kitchener-Waterloo Record, Saturday, 10 March 1979, p. 6) focusing on Bill 100 and teachers' right to strike. The author's opinion is that the teachers' use of union tactics to get higher pay may have meant that in some peoples' eyes they have lost their professional image. He/She believes, however, that they remain professionals in spite of this.
