Research and Writing

Series consists of research materials which relate to many different areas of Dendy's work in the field of architectural history. They include textual and graphic materials, as well as electronic information in the form of computer files stored on 3.5" floppy disks.

This includes the research materials acquired by Dendy during his studies at Cambridge University, England and probably at Columbia University in New York. These take the form of course handouts, ms. holograph notes, and photocopies of journal articles. A large number of the ms. holograph notes relate to the history of home building and residential architecture in Canada (this formed the subject of the thesis which Dendy wrote either for one of the Masters degree he received in Architectural History and/or for the PhD in Architectural History on which he was working).

Also included is material relating to topics studied by Dendy either at university or in his professional career. These research topics include: the architects Frank Darling, John Howard, and Oliver Hill; the architectural history of the city of Hamilton, Ont.; "The Smaller Houses of the American Suburbs", "The Houses of Indian Road", and "A Comparision of 504 Jarvis St. and 135 St. George St." (last three topics constitute research papers written by Dendy).

Other research materials contained in this file were gathered in the process of researching for Lost Toronto and for Toronto Observed. These research materials primarily take the form of planning information sheets, ms. lists of Toronto buildings/architects, tender information from the Toronto Globe (issues from the late 19th century), ms. holograph notes re Toronto building permit files, and some photographic materials. Some reviews of Lost Toronto can also be found in this series.

Other research materials relate to Dendy's extensive research on the residential area of Forest Hill and take the form of ms. holograph notes on Forest Hill building permit files. Photocopies of journal articles, ms. holograph notes and other materials, which appear to have been gathered and/or prepared for a proposed publication on the history of Canadian architecture, are also contained in this series.

Ms. research notes used by Dendy in preparation for Toronto walking tours led by him are also contained in this series, in addition to research materials used by him for projects he worked on in his capacity as consultant architectural historian to various architectural firms and government bodies.

Other files include information relating to projects Dendy worked on as architectural historian to the Property Restoration Branch of the Ontario Heritage Foundation from 1987-1989, and to work which he carried out for Tom Schwartz, President of Intraurban Projects, as well as to a study conducted by Dendy on CNR Railway Stations for the Architectural History Branch, Canadian Historic Sites Directorate of the Canadian Parks Service in 1991.

Advertising brochures : US/Can/British, mostly concerned with housing.

Contains materials primarily in the form of manufacturers' catalogues (dating from 1920's-1940's) re housing design and garden and greenhouse design. One publication was issued by the Ladies Home Journal and relates to bungalow design in the period pre World War II. Another item takes the form of a scrapbook compiled by Mary Eleanore Westley between 1921 and 1924 which includes clippings from magazines. These take the form of illustrations showing both exterior and interior home designs which were typical for the period. Manufacturers' catalogues include listings of home appliances, bathroom designs, greenhouse designs, and of roofing materials respectively.
One clipping (1989) contained in this file relates to plans for the new General Electric Building which is to be constructed using plastics along with other building materials.

Includes photocopies of journal articles re art history including the Victorian High Renaissance. Other items include photocopies of a German language article re wall systems. Additionally includes a titled file folder containing ms. notes and photocopies of journal articles relating to Canadian bank architecture.

Includes miscellaneous materials relating to a wide number of themes in the fields of both architecture and art. These materials include issues of periodicals including The Literary Review of Canada and newsletters of The Society of Architectural Historians; photocopies of journal articles and of extracts from books; a catalogue of contemporary art; photocopies of clippings; correspondence; and tourist guides and pamphlets relating to Ontario (especially Windsor) and to parts of the U.S.A.

Canada at home : the Canadian house and its furnishings, 1945-1967 : exhibition proposal by Dendy for the Royal Ontario Museum.

Contains untitled loose materials. This includes a copy of the proposal Dendy wrote for an exhibition on the Canadian Home and its Furnishings over the period 1945-1967. Other materials in this file include research materials which Dendy received from the archives of the University of British Columbia re work which he was carrying out in preparation for this proposed exhibition. These research materials take the form of copies of inventories of materials in the Melva Dwyer collection, the Binning Manuscript collection, and the collection of the Council of Forest Industries of B.C. at the archives of the University of British Columbia.

Includes booklets, folded flyers, and pamphlets primarily in the form of guides to museum and gallery exhibitions/collections in Canada.Additionally, includes a report by Heritage Canada on the profitability of heritage conservation. Other items include a tourist guide entitled "Hunter's Panoramic Guide from Niagara to Quebec" (originally published in 1857), a publication on the early history of the township of Erin, and a pamphlet re historical maps of Canada. Finally this file contains various publications on Canadian architecture.

Includes research papers by Dendy and others re various architectural themes. One research paper by Stephen Otto relates to the architect F. J. Rastrick. Another photocopied draft ts. by Jim Lemon and Stephen Speisman is entitled "The Building of a Suburb" and relates to the history of Toronto architecture, while a second draft ts. (original) by Dendy is entitled "Temples of Commerce: From the First Canadian Bank to the Second World War". Both of these ts. drafts appear to constitute research conducted to constitute part of a book or books on architecture. Other items included in this file include ms. holograph notes and photocopies of articles relating to bank building, Frederick Rastrick, city planning in Toronto and other matters.

These clippings also focus on architectural developments in Toronto and elsewhere. Also includes a clipping (1990) re Africville, a black settlement in the Maritime provinces. Another clipping focuses on an exhibition of the art works of Wiitasalo and Daniels at the Art Gallery of York University in 1993.

Includes draft tss. (originals and photocopies) with holograph corrections of different sections written for a work intended for publication and entitled Concise History of Architecture in Canada. One draft ts. was originally stored in a ring binder and is marked as comprising chapters written by Dendy, as well as chapters on Quebec by other authors. The remaining draft tss. are loose leaf copies by Dendy.
Additionally includes two clippings re Ottawa's new National Gallery (1988).

This file also contains some photocopies from books relating to Italian architecture including the Palazzo del Te and Jacopo Strada's Mantuan Drawings.

The majority of items in this file constitute Dendy's research materials on Forest Hill, Toronto. These materials include photographs, contact sheets (both originals and photocopies), photographic negatives, ts. notes re building file permit information on residences in Forest Hill, and photocopies of lists of electors in the Forest Hill area of Toronto. Photographs and a research report re the Forest Hill Collegiate Institute are contained in this file, in addtion to a report on the history of the Forest Hill Village.

Some materials in this file do, however, relate to other areas of Dendy's research and interests. These items include correspondence with the architects Page & Steele re research Dendy was conducting for a forthcoming book on Canadian Domestic Architecture. Other correspondence with Page & Steele relates to research which Dendy conducted on 74-76 York St. (W). Dendy's research on Frank Darling forms the subject of some other correspondence. Clippings re architectural developments in Toronto, photocopies of photographs from the Archives of Eaton's of Canada, as well as photocopies of journal articles relating to Canadian architecture are also contained in this file.

Additionally contains photocopies of photographs of many buildings in Hamilton from Public Archives Canada, as well as photocopies of the index cards for these photographs. Photocopies from the book Up and Down Hamilton by T. M. Bailey and C.A. Carter are also included in this file. File dividers are used to divide these materials in to separate sections according to the topic to which they relate. Many of the notes are taken from the Hamilton Times and the Hamilton Weekly Spectator and relate to tender calls in the 1840s, 1850s,1860s, and 1870s.
