Material created or accumulated by Andrew Telegdi during his tenure as a Member of Parliament related to Telegdi’s participation in a visit of a Parliamentary delegation led by Peter Milliken to Austria and Hungary. At the time, Peter Milliken served as a Member of Parliament representing Kingston and the Islands and as Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada. Records include briefing notes, biographical information, parliamentary histories, and country profiles. Scrapbook created by John Gartshore Martin about his experiences in WWII. Includes snapshots, newspaper clippings, ephemera, and correspondence. Snapshots were taken during John's training in Canada and his time in Europe, and show sporting events; fellow officers and soldiers; towns, buildings, and countryside in Normandy, Belgium and Holland; tanks and other equipment; a post-war ceremony; and other subjects.

Scrapbook includes a telegram from John's parents informing him of his brother Jamie's death, ts. Information relating to battles, a letter to Jessie Martin regarding John's DSO, and other items. Clippings relate to John's involvement in the war and his decoration with the DSO by the Governor General Viscount Alexander. The scrapbook pages are not in order and have been left as found. Some pages contain identification for the photographs.

Royal Air Forces Ex-P.O.W. Association reunion : programme and press clipping.

A programme outlining the events and activities of the Royal Air Forces Ex-P.O.W. Association international reunion for kriegies held in London, England from May 13-16, 1977. The programme belonged to Cameron Hill who attended the reunion.

Also includes one press clipping from an unknown publication describing a dinner held during the reunion where attendees, including more than 300 Canadians, dined with Prince Philip, consort of Elizabeth II, Queen of Great Britain.

Receipts.

Four receipts issued to Cameron Hill while he was temporarily stationed on the Isle of Man with leave to Bournemouth, England between May 11, 1945 and May 31, 1945.

Two of the receipts are from James Lay & Co. Limited, a clothier located in Douglas, the capital town of the Isle of Man for the purchase of a pair of pajamas and two suits. One receipt is for Cameron's tab at the Officer's Mess, R.C.A.F. Station in the town of Bournemouth dated May 29, 1945. One receipt is possibly for a hotel room or a similar accommodation also dated May 29, 1945.

File consists of a scrapbook kept by William John Motz with photographs and ephemera from the Canadian newspaper tour of Europe from June 6th-July 26th, 1929. The tour visited: Paris, Chester, Windsor, Versailles, The Trossachs, Amiens, Vienna, Vimy, Albert, Prague, Berlin, Brussels, The Hague, Birmingham, Ayr, Scheveningen, London, Hampton, Hever, Kenliworth, Warwick, Stratford, Chester, Wales, Blackpool, Mellrose, Edinburgh, Loch Lomond, Inversaid, Dumfries, Liverpool and others.

Minister of Foreign Affairs’ visit to Hungary and Poland.

Material created and accumulated by Andrew Telegdi during his tenure as a Member of Parliament when he accompanied Peter Mackay, then Minister of Foreign Affairs, to Budapest, Hungary to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Hungary Revolution and to participate in bilateral meetings in Warsaw, Poland between October 20-24, 2006. Records include invitations, programs, and correspondence such as a letter of welcome from Robert Hage, Canada's Ambassador to Hungary. Also includes tickets to events such as the Canada Salutes Hungary Gala in Budapest, Hungary, and a memorial publication published by the Hungarian Culture Centre Mindszenty Hall in Windsor, Ontario. In addition, the file contains a briefing book for Hungary and Poland as well as a presentation folder containing a program of events for celebrations in Hungary and other textual material.

Correspondence between various members of the Sommer family including letters that describe Cornelius Sommer’s European vacation and Angelika Sommer’s political involvement in Germany, her Marxist beliefs and her plans to pursue post-secondary education in Germany. Some letters also indicate that Angelika Sommer met and was dating Uwe Schriever, who later becomes her husband. Also includes greeting cards, postcards, a pamphlet, and photographs of Uwe Schriever, and the wedding of Friedemann and Petra (surnames unknown) in March 1970.

Includes letters interspersed with details about family life such as Ulrich Sommer and Cornelius Sommer’s studies in university, Angelika Sommer’s pending visit with her grandparents, and Lina Neumeyer Raatz’s declining health. Lina Neumeyer Raatz was Ulrich Sommer’s aunt and she lived in Germany. Also contains correspondence between the Sommer family and the Altenmueller family from Cooksville, Ontario. Records include letters, postcards, and pamphlets.

Includes letters interspersed with details about family life such as Ulrich Sommer and his wife Gisela Sommer’s immigration to Canada with their two children Cornelius Sommer and Angelika Sommer in 1954. Also contains letters confirming Ulrich and Gisela Sommer passed an exam designed for new Canadians that was established by the Government of Ontario’s Department of Education Information Branch. Records include letters, greeting cards, postcards, children’s drawings, pamphlets, hand-drawn floor plans, wallpaper samples, a cross-stitch sampler, and photographs of family members.

Material created or accumulated by Andrew Telegdi during his tenure as a Member of Parliament documenting his personal interest and political involvement in matters relating to Canadian-Hungarian relations. Material in this file is primarily related to the planning of events and activities across Canada commemorating the 1956 Hungarian Revolution such as conferences held by the University of Ottawa Institute for Canadian Studies and the University of Toronto, screenings of the film Freedom’s Fury and the CBC documentary The Fifty-Sixers, the opening of the NEW LIVES photographic exhibition curated by the National Arts Centre, and the development of a special stamp issued by Canada Post. Records include correspondence, invitations, brochures, press clippings, news releases, speaking notes, calendars, and other textual material. The file also contains programs for a state dinner in honour of His Excellency László Sólyom, then President of the Republic of Hungary, as well as a picture of Telegdi and Sólyom shaking hands during the event.

Moreover, the file includes a copy of a framework agreement between St. Jerome’s University in Waterloo, Ontario and Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest, Hungary to develop co-operation between the two institutions in the fields of education and research.

Material created or accumulated by Andrew Telegdi during his tenure as a Member of Parliament documenting his personal interest and political involvement in matters relating to Canadian-Hungarian relations. Many records detail Telegdi’s diplomatic trip to Hungary to attend the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe in 1994 with Jean Chrétien, Prime Minister of Canada, and Telegdi’s participation in the 1996 Jimmy Carter Work Project building detached homes in Gödöllő, Hungary. Also includes material related to the decoration of Telegdi’s mother, Elenora “Nora” Telegdi, with the Small Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary for her activities for Hungarian communities beyond Hungary’s borders. Records include correspondence, news releases, conference material, invitations, tickets, programs, and other textual material.

Many records detail events and activities held in Hungary in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of revolutions that swept across Europe in 1848. In addition, several documents address Hungary’s integration into Europe and interest in joining the United Nations. Other records outline the condition of Hungarian schools in Transylvania, the repatriation of Hungarian owned artwork residing in Canada following the Second World War, and other topics. Records include reports, speech transcripts, correspondence, invitations, handwritten notes, and a notebook.

Berthing card and meal card.

A berthing card and meal card issued to Cameron Hill during the Second World War likely when he traveled on a troopship sailing from Halifax Harbour in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Liverpool, England between August and September 1941.

The berthing card indicates that Cameron was assigned to cabin S22, in section 3 of the Sports deck. The meal card indicates that Cameron was assigned to eat first meal (breakfast) during the second sitting at table number 28. The name of the ship that Cameron traveled on is unknown.
