No II memoranda of missionary visits, Washington, D.C.

Diary kept by Samuel Franklin French detailing his missionary activities in Washington, D.C. from December of 1860 to August of 1861. Highlights include descriptions of Washington neighbourhoods such as English Hill (north east of Judiciary square) and The Island (south of the mall) as well as references to the beginning of the American Civil War. In the back of the diary are lists including parishioners in Tewksbury, Massachusetts 1871, list of parishioners in Wallingford, Vermont, 1889, record of school Wallingford, Vermont, 1883, and list of members of an unknown committee in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, 1875.

Side 1 and 2; a recording of a presentation given by Margaret Catley-Carlson, President of the Canadian International Development Agency at the annual meeting of the YMCA’s of Canada held in Halifax, Nova Scotia on June 16, 1984. This presentation was part of plenary session V and discussed the power and potential of the voluntary sector in humanitarian efforts and shortfalls of the current government. Additionally, she talked about the power of organizations like the YMCA to respond to change and confront the dangers of nuclear war, threats to the environment, and the continuing problem of world poverty. Some parts of Margaret Catley-Carlson’s speech were delivered in French.

Contains correspondence and other materials all of which relate to the affairs, activities etc. of the W.C.W.T.A. Includes correspondence sent by and received by Mary Johnston. Some of this correspondence was sent or received in her capacity as a key teacher, as President of Unit 1, as a W.C.W.T.A. Past President, as the association's County Adviser, and as a member of the Book Project Committee.

Other materials in this file include ts. of W.C.W.T.A.'s comments on the Reville Report, a poem by Joyce Lodge (West Unit Executive Member) entitled "You Will Be There", an information sheet featuring an outline of the history of the W.C.W.T.A. Also includes agenda for W.C.W.T.A. executive retreat in 1990, as well as a list of W.C.W.T.A. priorities for 1997-1998. Additionally, contains lists of association executive members from 1996-1997, a list of women administrators for 1997-1998, and a list of honorary association members for 1997-1998.

Ontario Teachers Strike to Oppose Anti-Strike Bill (Bill 274).

Contains news clippings which appeared in The Globe and Mail focusing on Ontario teachers' opposition to Bill 274 designed to prevent mass resignations submitted by teachers from taking effect on Dec. 31, 1973. This bill would instead impose compulsory arbitration to resolve disputed contract issues. Actions taken by teachers to oppose this bill included a province-wide strike on Dec. 18, 1973.

The author's opinion is that the teachers' use of union tactics to get higher pay may have meant that in some peoples' eyes they have lost their professional image. He/She believes, however, that they remain professionals in spite of this.
