Consists of six photographs of the Shand Dam site on the Grand River above Fergus, Ontario, during the construction phase. The following identifications are provided on verso:

  • Shand : widening and deepening river diversion.
  • Shand : looking west across dam showing forms for east wing wall;
  • Shand : commencing concrete operations on east wing wall; Shand: pouring concrete by means of pumpcrete machine;
  • Shand : east wing wall completed for winter, showing backfill; Shand : floor of spillway prepared for winter.

Consists of DVD transfer of a videocassette of a 16 mm movie of skiers at the Chicopee Ski Club, Kitchener, Ontario in the 1940s. The film was made by Norman Schneider and narration was added later by Herb Schneider, and Ralph Beaumont and Jim Bauer of the Grand River Conservation Authority.

Also appears to include scenes from the opening ceremony of the Shand Dam. The film was made by Hugh Templin, GRCA Commissioner and editor of the Fergus News Record, Fergus, Ont.

Acres, Hydraulic and Hydro-Electric Engineer, Niagara Falls, Ont. dated February 8, 1940 for the Grand River Conservation Commission concerning preliminary study and exploratory work on the proposed Luther-Shand water control structure on the upper Grand River. The report summarizes investigatory work performed in 1938-1939.

Five copy prints of construction machinery clearing the lake bed, one photograph of Shand Dam, Aug. 14, 1940 and 16 col. snapshots of Belwood Lake in the 1960's. These latter have tape on the verso and have adhered to each other. Also includes a photocopy of the Aug. 8, 1942 Globe and Mail account of the opening of the Shand Dam.

Consists of a ts. (carbon copy) of an agreement issued by the Minister of Public Works concerning percentages and amounts of capital costs payable by the Province of Ontario to the Grand River Conservation Commission for the purchase of lands, erection of works and creation of reservoir. Includes a covering letter from R.A. McAllister, Deputy Minister of Public Works to the Grand River Conservation Commission, March 19, 1943. The agreement probably relates to the construction of the Shand Dam and Reservoir.

Flood warning : Grand River Conservation Authority and other agencies : reports on floods and their management.

Consists of a binder containing materials relating to the emergency preparedness and flood warning measures undertaken by the Grand River Conservation Authority and its precursor, the Grand River Conservation Commission, and various Canadian and American governmental bodies. Includes correspondence, offprints and photocopies of periodical articles, pamphlets concerning control of flood damage.

Also present are blueline charts of rainfall amounts of Grand River run-off, prepared by the Grand River Conservation Commission, 1948 and blueline graph of water flow at Lake Conestogo, Belwood Reservoir and other sites on the Grand River System, prepared by the GRCC, 1960.

Series consists of minutes of the general meetings of the Grand Valley Conservation Authority (GVCA) together with minutes of the GVCA Executive Committee. Includes minutes of the Grand Valley Conservation Authority Advisory Boards, whose number and official names varied over time. The name order of these bodies also varied, e.g. the Advisory Board on Recreation also appears as the Recreation Advisory Board.

Flood Inquiry, 1974.

Consists of materials assembled by the Grand River Conservation Authority apparently in connection with a trial commencing in June, 1980 involving a lawsuit against the GRCA for property damage sustained by plaintiffs during the 1974 flood of the Grand River. Contains ts. (original and photocopy) correspondence to and from the Grand River Conservation Authority from their legal representatives, the firm of Lochead Sills Barristers, Kitchener, Ont.

Also includes ts.(original and photocopies) correspondence from 1948 to 1969 between the GRCA and federal and provincial authorities concerning flood control projects, and between the GRCA and legal firms, which appears to have been collated as evidence. Also includes ts.(photocopy) schedule of evidence presented by the GRCA at the hearings of the Ontario Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Grand River Flood, 1974; and ms.(original) report titled : Report on Grand River Flood Event, May 16-19, 1974, by the Grand River Conservation Authority.
