File consists of business and personal papers of Louis Breithaupt including accounts, business correspondence, circulars, etc. Included are letters to and from Charles A. Ahrens and J.F. Schoellkopf. Letters in German include those from [?] Wagner, F.A. Goetze, P. Wentz, Jacob Hailer, Catharine Breithaupt, dated August 8, 1861 [marked C.B.], and others.

Also in the file is a drawing and notes of machinery, a bill for fruit trees, bushes and roses, and six letters from Jacob Burckle, and to Catharine Breithaupt, "Dear Sister", from M.A. Burckle. Jacob & his wife [Mary] were persuaded by L.B. to move from the U.S. to Berlin to help in the business and with boarders. Most of the letters are reports on the state of the business and on the charater of other employees.

File consists predominantly letters of condolence written to Clare Clark after the death of her husband Wilfred Harold Clark in 1982 and of her brother H. Spencer Clark in 1986. A copy of the card sent out by the family of Spencer Clark to acknowledge condolences expressed is also among the items in this file.
Also contained in this file are three clippings. One is an obituary for Spencer Clark, and the other two are commemorative articles which focus on his contributions as a promoter of the arts and founder of the Scarborough Guild Inn. Reference is also made to the fact that he became a member of the Order of Canada in 1983 and honorary doctor of laws at the University of Waterloo. He was also awarded an Award of Merit by the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. This file also contains a typescript leaf (source unidentified) which also refers to the award of a Medal by the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts to Spencer Clark.
Additionally, this file contains a card sent to Spencer Clark's family informing them that the Heart and Stroke Foundation have gratefully received a contribution from Elsie and John Stein in memory of Mr. H. Spencer Clark. A letter from the Canadian Association for Adult Education to the family of Spencer Clark contains expressions of the association's gratitude for the receipt of a contribution by Clare Clark in memory of her brother Spencer. A letter to Clare from J. Russell Hewetson (1986) appears to relate to a proposed idea for the headstone of Spencer Clark. Finally, a list of letters to be acknowledged by H. Spencer Clark is also contained in this file.

This number includes many letters of condolence on the death of Albert's brother Ezra Carl, who was killed in the gasworks explosion. Among them is a letter from W.L. Mackenzie King written February 2, 1897 from the University of Chicago. Also present is an undated poem about the Berlin High School sent to Albert by Emma Kaufman and Martha Anthes, written probably at the New Year 1897/1898. File consists of one piece of correspondence from Albert Breithaupt's brother Louis, writing more or less "in loco parentis." Louis J. was 15 years older than Albert and had assumed his role as head of the family at the age of 21 on the death of his father in 1880.
