Research and Writing

Series consists of research materials which relate to many different areas of Dendy's work in the field of architectural history. They include textual and graphic materials, as well as electronic information in the form of computer files stored on 3.5" floppy disks.

This includes the research materials acquired by Dendy during his studies at Cambridge University, England and probably at Columbia University in New York. These take the form of course handouts, ms. holograph notes, and photocopies of journal articles. A large number of the ms. holograph notes relate to the history of home building and residential architecture in Canada (this formed the subject of the thesis which Dendy wrote either for one of the Masters degree he received in Architectural History and/or for the PhD in Architectural History on which he was working).

Also included is material relating to topics studied by Dendy either at university or in his professional career. These research topics include: the architects Frank Darling, John Howard, and Oliver Hill; the architectural history of the city of Hamilton, Ont.; "The Smaller Houses of the American Suburbs", "The Houses of Indian Road", and "A Comparision of 504 Jarvis St. and 135 St. George St." (last three topics constitute research papers written by Dendy).

Other research materials contained in this file were gathered in the process of researching for Lost Toronto and for Toronto Observed. These research materials primarily take the form of planning information sheets, ms. lists of Toronto buildings/architects, tender information from the Toronto Globe (issues from the late 19th century), ms. holograph notes re Toronto building permit files, and some photographic materials. Some reviews of Lost Toronto can also be found in this series.

Other research materials relate to Dendy's extensive research on the residential area of Forest Hill and take the form of ms. holograph notes on Forest Hill building permit files. Photocopies of journal articles, ms. holograph notes and other materials, which appear to have been gathered and/or prepared for a proposed publication on the history of Canadian architecture, are also contained in this series.

Ms. research notes used by Dendy in preparation for Toronto walking tours led by him are also contained in this series, in addition to research materials used by him for projects he worked on in his capacity as consultant architectural historian to various architectural firms and government bodies.

Other files include information relating to projects Dendy worked on as architectural historian to the Property Restoration Branch of the Ontario Heritage Foundation from 1987-1989, and to work which he carried out for Tom Schwartz, President of Intraurban Projects, as well as to a study conducted by Dendy on CNR Railway Stations for the Architectural History Branch, Canadian Historic Sites Directorate of the Canadian Parks Service in 1991.

Canada at home : the Canadian house and its furnishings, 1945-1967 : exhibition proposal by Dendy for the Royal Ontario Museum.

Contains untitled loose materials. This includes a copy of the proposal Dendy wrote for an exhibition on the Canadian Home and its Furnishings over the period 1945-1967. Other materials in this file include research materials which Dendy received from the archives of the University of British Columbia re work which he was carrying out in preparation for this proposed exhibition. These research materials take the form of copies of inventories of materials in the Melva Dwyer collection, the Binning Manuscript collection, and the collection of the Council of Forest Industries of B.C. at the archives of the University of British Columbia.

The materials contained in this file appear to primarily constitute research materials gathered by Dendy re the Toronto architect A. J. Diamond. As such this file includes photocopies of journal articles about A. J. Diamond, as well as a copy of a conference paper presented by A. J. Diamond entitled "Rehabilitation in Practice" This file also includes the company prospectus for the architectural firm, A. J. Diamond Associates. This includes details of the architectural and planning projects in which this firm has been involved, as well as information on the firm's personnel, awards, and publications. Additionally this file contains ms. holograph notes re Canadian homes.

Includes tss. (computer output) listing building permit file information for the Forest Hill area. This takes the form of a street-by-street listing. Ms. holograph notes containing building permit file information for Forest Hill (spanning the permits #3 to #4887 with some gaps) is also contained in this file.
Additionally, this file contains one ts. (computer output) with some holograph corrections which constitutes Dendy's research on the architectural history of Forest Hill. Ms. holograph notes on the subject of "The Home Between the Wars" are also contained in this file.

Includes guide books, history and architectural history books, pamphlets and flyers re historic buildings, sites, and regions in Great Britain. Also includes guides to art or architectural collections or exhibitions. Additionally includes a status report which relates to historic site preservation in the Carribbean (1978).

Includes serial publications (from 1960's and 1970's) re suburban housing design and vacation home designs. Additionally includes a section from The Toronto Star , 25 March 1989, entitled "New in Homes", as well as a publication of the Canadian Housing Information Centre (1991) listing the external research program reports published by this centre.

Materials in this file consist primarily of tourist guides and other guides to historic sites, as well as to towns, cities, and regions in Ontario. They take the form of brochures, pamphlets, booklets, and books and many of them have an architectural and/or historical focus. A considerable number of these items are Canadian government publications. Maps, reports, research papers, and photocopies from periodicals and books are also contained in this file.

Includes photocopies of photographs with captions (on back of each page) indicating what building the photograph depicts and the date it was taken where available. The photographs show key architectural structures in Ottawa and Toronto, Ontario, in Quebec City, Quebec, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and in Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Contains materials relating to Renaissance and Baroque architecture including photocopied ts. reading lists and other course materials issued by the Department of History of Art at the University of Cambridge, England. Toronto : architecture : miscellaneous.

Materials in this file relate primarily to Toronto's architectural history. This includes materials relating to professional work which Dendy carried out in his capacity as architectural historian including the Heath Park project and a significance report re Belleville City Hall. Some other materials relate to the reprint of Lost Toronto in the early 1990's. Materials include news clippings, photocopies of journal articles and of extracts from books and other publications, ms. notes, reports, and some correspondence addressed to Dendy or sent by Dendy.

Also includes photocopies of architectural drawings and plans, as well as of illustrations, maps, and photographs. A small number of b&w 8" x 10" photographs depicting Eaton's, College Street, are also contained in this file. A photocopied ts. list of the inventory of the Douglas Kertland Architectural Drawings Collection is addtionally among the items in this file.

Contains material relating to Toronto's architecture and architects. Includes issues of periodicals, photocopies of journal articles (including an article by William Kilbourn), clippings, photocopies of photographs of buildings, ms. notes by Dendy, and photocopies of bibliographies. Additionally contains promotional literature from many Toronto-based architectural firms.

Other items include ts. research notes and research papers by Stephen Otto primarily re various architects including John Tully, Henry Bowyer Lane, John Harlock Elliot, Cyrus Pole Thomas and William Beaumont Leather. This file also contains photocopied documents (primarily correspondence) received by Dendy from the Archives at the Dalhousie University Library. These documents relate to Frank Darling.

Includes ms. holograph notes re building permit file details for some Toronto buildings. Also includes correspondence received by Dendy from Margo Welch, the Head of Exhibitions at the Royal Ontario Museum on May 25, 1990 re some exhibition proposals which Dendy had sent to the museum.

Includes ms. holograph notes containing Dendy's research on Toronto architecture from the Toronto newspaper The Globe during the period 1880-1886. Some photocopies from The Globe and from the journal publication The Builder are also contained in this file. For each year from 1880-1886 these materials are divided into two main topics: 1. Miscellaneous; 2. Tender Calls.

United States : guides and brochures.

Materials contained in this file were collected by Dendy when he lived in the U.S.A or was visiting the U.S.A. They include maps, and many tourist guides in the form of pamphlets, folded flyers, and brochures. Many of these take the form of guides to museum and gallery exhibitions, while others take the form of walking tour guides or guides to historic buildings or regions within the U.S.A.

In particular guides to different areas of Chicago issued by the Commission on Chicago Historical and Architectural Landmarks are contained in this file. Other items include postcards, col. photographs, as well as clippings and issues of journals which relate primarily to the theme of architecture and/or art in certain areas of the U.S.A.

Research: Card Files

Series consists of the detailed hand-written card files prepared by Dendy as a guide to research materials available in his fields of interest in the subject area of Architectural History.
These card files provide different types of information:

  • Bibliographic references to materials in a number of subject areas. This includes special interest topics of Dendy's such as Frank Darling's library and the Massey Patronay. Additionally, an A-Z index of architects (mostly Canadian) is also available. This features bibliographic references to journal articles where information on each architect can be found. In some cases these cards also provide information on the office or home address of these architects.
  • Building permit information for Canada (mainly Toronto) for late nineteenth century or early twentieth century. This includes building permit no. and year, address of building, description of building, and name of architect. This information is organized either by architect, by date, or by street or region. However, in some cases no apparent order applies.
  • Alphabetical index to architects. Information provided on these card files includes the name of the building, address of the building, and year of construction of the building designed by each architect listed. In some cases a brief description of the building is also provided in additin to a bibliographic reference to the source from which information on the building was obtained. Most of the buildings listed in this index were designed in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.
  • Architect and subject index. Card files are filed alphabetically by name of architect, author name, publication title, or architectural topic. These cards take the form of bibliographic references to publications.
  • Subject indexes. This includes an alphabetical subject index to various Canadian and foreign architectural topics, as well as a subject index relating specifically to the history of Toronto's architecture.
  • Miscellaneous card files. Some small sections of card files can also be found which relate to various topics and which are organized in different ways. This includes an index of designs (pencil drawings, prints, and photographs) for buildings in Toronto and other parts of Ontario, an index to topics relating to foreign architecture, and miscellaneous card files re Toronto architecture.

Files contained in the "SWARTZ" directory relate to work Dendy carried out for Tom Schwartz, President of Intraurban Projects re the 1070 Queen St. E. Project. The buildings depicted in these photographs are individually identified on many of the contact sheets. The photographic images in this file depict Toronto buildings and appear to have been taken for the purposes of Dendy's walking tours. They may also have been taken in the process of researching and gathering materials for the publication Lost Toronto.

Includes four b&w photographs (one mounted on cardboard, one in a frame), one of which depicts the Toronto Western Hospital at the end of the 19th century, and three of which depict this hospital at the beginning of 20th century.
