Note: Sal Mineo tried to usurp the rights to the play from the author, the original producers (1967-’68) and from the film people already interested in 1969, but was stopped by John Herbert and the legal copyright protections. Mineo threatened Herbert by telephone in 1969, saying, “Don’t mess with a New York Italian.” J.H.’s reply was, “Don’t mess with a Toronto Queer!” J.H. denied S.M. any involvement in a film.”
