The sideshow, or, The ten-in-one tent.

File contains 6 pen and ink drawings created by John Herbert in 1973 regarding his comic "The Slideshow". The drawings have captions written on them. Includes author's note on the envelope: "Box D: John Herbert archives. D15: original drawings, 1973. The Sideshow (a comic book). The enclosed 6 pages were John Herbert's beginning of a comic-book project (under the name 'Jack Past') based on his memories of working with a carnival burlesque show (Model Shows' 'Paris After Midnight') in 1953, travelling through Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia (over a 6 months period)."

File contains 28 drawings (originals and photocopies) of draft cartoon drawings, unfinished drawings, and sketches. They also include notes regarding story development ideas. Includes a photocopy of a three page manuscript letter to the editor of Now Weekly. Includes author's note on the envelope: "Box E: John Herbert archives , Porter Library, University of Waterloo. Enclosed: cartoons. E16: a variety of complete and incomplete cartoons and comic strips by John Herbert (under one or another of his 'noms de plume' as cartoonist) - plus some preliminary sketches and notes in planning the cartoons. Names (noms de plume) Nemesis, Hellican, Jan, R.U. Horny, Jacki Brun, No. of items: 31 pages - Dates: 1989 to 1994."

File contains the April 2, 1992 issue of the magazine "Frank". There is a comic created by John Herbert published in the magazine on page 22. Includes author's note on the envelope: "Box C - C6: FRANK Magazine: A comic strip by J.H. aka 'Nemesis', page 22 - 'The Club on Bay Street'. Note: John Herbert used the nom de plume 'Nemesis', as a cartoonist for Onion, the Toronto Paper on the Arts, from 1975 to 1982. Ephemera : drawings.

Twenty drawings and sketches by Orpheus Moyer Schantz. Included are portraits, studies of animals, technical drawings for a boat, one ink drawing of the back of a woman in a gown, two drawings after C.D. Gibson- "When Doctors Disagree" and "Mr. Pipp just after dinner steps our for a few moments with a change acquaintance. He returns at 2 A.M.", and two with leaf varieties and poetry. Smaller drawings were originally found in an old men's silk handkerchief box with other ephemera.

Series consists of artwork, cartoons and comics created by John Herbert between 1964 and 1998. Many of the drawings illustrate story development and ideas for his plays as well as comics and advertisements. The series is divided into files and arranged chronologically.

Contains one colour poster advertising Dare Foods Limited schoolhouse promotion. The promotion consisted of customers filling out ballots to win a free cardboard schoolhouse playhouse for children.

Porter, Dana : caricature.

File consists of one reproduction of a caricature of Dana Porter by Henry H. Bull. Bull was the Crown Attorney for Metropolitan Toronto and the County of York and drew many caricatures of colleagues. The reproduction print is mounted using Durograf technology, a type of screen printing where the image is applied to a spunbonded polyester fibre. The image has been mounted on a piece of acrylic, with a biography of Henry Bull on the back.

Porter, Dana : reproductions of paintings.

File consists of six high quality colour photocopies of original paintings by Dana Porter. The paintings are typically Northern Ontario landscapes and were stylistically inspired by the Group of Seven. Porter's maternal uncle was Group of Seven painter Lawren Harris.

File consists of one portrait of David Sovereign Bowlby. The painting is oil on prepared canvas. A signature on the bottom left is hard to read, but may say [Ella] [Moss].

Bowlby, George Herbert.

File consists of one painted portrait of George Herbert Bowlby in his army uniform. The painting appears to be watercolour on ivorine, and the signature reads E.C. Blisley, 1917. Bowlby died in 1917 during First World War and this is possibly a commemorative portrait.

The order of industrial heroism (physick 220-223).

File consists of one mock up for The Order of Industrial Heritage award as presented by the London Daily Herald. This second version shows the original holy ghost dove has been replaced by a star. Also includes one colour copy of the print and a caption created by Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library.

File consists of seven proofs of the prints created by Eric Gill for the Aldine Bible. Note that there is one blank page, but it is unclear if it is intentionally blank or if a print has been removed.

Salvator noster hodie natus est: gaudeamus.

File consists of three small card folded horizontally featuring a woodcut illustrion of a fish and a religious verse. Lettering reads "Salvator noster hodie natus est: gaudeamus. Neque enim fas est locum esse tristitiae, ubi natalis est vitae. Nemo ab hujus alacritatis participatione secernitur: una cunctis laetitiae communis est ratio. Ersultet (sic) sanctus, quia appropinquat ad palmam; gaudeat paccator, quia invitatur ad beniam."

Translation: This day our Saviour was born: let us rejoice. For it is impossible to be sad to, where is the birthday of life. No one from participating in our category, all a joy to both systems. Rejoice, O thou holy, because it approaches nearer to the palm;'s joy is a sinner, for he is invited to pardon.
