File consists of material relating to the pollution of rivers in England and Wales, and mainly includes reports on biological surveys of rivers by Hynes and other researchers. Also present are some ms. field notes (summaries), maps, correspondence, a graph relating to the toxicity of DDT, a photograph of smelt specimen, and tables of data relating to a Kenyan rivers. Rivers and other bodies of water surveyed are:
- River Lea (or Lee) (1952-1954);
- River Dee (1938-1939, 1948-1950, 1955-1958);
- River Penk and tributaries (1956-1960);
- Great Ouse (1955-1959);
- River Flit (1958);
- Rivers Ouzel and Flit (1958);
- River Kent (1960-1961);
- Peakshole Water, Bradwell Brook, and River Noe (1955),
- Chard Reservoir (1952), and
- streams flowing into Rostherne Mere (1964).
The surveys were conducted at the request of various local government departments and committees, river boards, and chemical and paper companies.
