Fonds consists of materials documenting William Dendy's life and career as an architectural historian including university course notes, research material for published works, research material on the history of Canadian architecture and other research interests such as Forest Hill, Hamilton, the architects Frank Darling and William Somerville, and the Massey family. Some materials relate to Dendy's teaching activities, Toronto walking tours and consultancy projects.

Also present are articles, card files, clippings, correspondence, electronic records, ephemera, manuscripts, maps, manuscript and typescript notes, as well as photographs, negatives, and approximately 40,000 slides (including more than 17,000 images of Canadian architecture, urban space, and landscape). The slides were taken by Dendy and are each individually identified by him.

Biographical

Series consists of materials relating to Dendy's university education and his career as an architectural historian.
These materials include the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree certificates received by Dendy in the 1970's from the University of Cambridge where he studied Architectural History as well as clippings, ephemera and portraits.

Includes originals and photocopies of an article about Dendy by Adele Freedman which appeared in The Globe and Mail on Sept. 14, 1991. Additionally includes photocopy of a clipping (1988?) which appeared in The Toronto Star which focused on Dendy's career as an architectural historian.
This file also includes a photocopy of a review of Toronto Observed: Its Architecture, Patrons, and History by Dendy and Kilbourn. This appeared in Books in Canada in May 1987. Invitations to the launching event for this publication from Oxford University Press in association with Ballenford Books are also among the items included in this file.

Finally this file includes a folded flyer listing the winners of the City of Toronto Book Awards in the period 1974-1991.Lost Toronto received this award in 1979, while Toronto Observed: Its Architecture, Patrons and History received this award in 1987.The program produced for the City of Toronto's Civic Honours Day 1979 is also included in this file. City of Toronto Book awards were presented to William Dendy and other authors as part of this program.

Portrait photographs.

Includes one photocopy of b&w protrait photograph of Dendy as a very young man. A second b&w portrait photograph of Dendy was taken by Hodgskiss Studios in Apr. 1976. The third b&w portrait photograph of Dendy appears in his passport, which was issued in 1981, and is also among the items included in this file.

University : as student and teacher.

Includes degree certificates awarded to Dendy including a Degree of Bachelor of Arts (1976) and a Master of Arts (1979) from St. John's College in the University of Cambridge. Additionally, includes a photograph which shows Dendy receiving a degree or an award at unidenfitied ceremony or event.

Another photograph appears to depict students and staff in the school of architecture at Massey College, University of Toronto (1979-1980). Dendy was one of the staff members in this year and he is among the individuals in this photograph. All members in this photograph are identified in an accompanying list.

Finally, this file contains a photograph depicting a group of people who Dendy may have worked or studied with. The occasion on which this photograph was taken and the individuals in this photograph are, however, not identified.

Graphic Material

Series consists of framed and unframed graphic material owned by Dendy, including engravings and etchings, original artwork, posters, photographs, and illustrations cut out of Harper's Weekly and The Illustrated London News. These items reflect Dendy's interests in architectural history, but also in art, opera, theatre, and literature.

This series includes single original paintings by A.Y. Jackson and Nicholas Hornyansky; an original colour cartoon by E.W.Kemble; hand-coloured photographs by H. Marshall Gardiner and W. R. MacAskill; engraved work by A. Sterner.

Award to William Dendy from the Toronto City Council, June 19, 1991.

This award was presented to Dendy by the Mayor of Toronto in acknowledgement of the contribution made through his books Lost Toronto and Toronto Observed, as well as Dendy's other "efforts to maintain our interest in the past".

Certificate is signed by the Mayor of Toronto, and bears the seal of the City of Toronto, Office of the Mayor.
