Biographical

Series consists of materials relating to Dendy's university education and his career as an architectural historian.
These materials include the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree certificates received by Dendy in the 1970's from the University of Cambridge where he studied Architectural History as well as clippings, ephemera and portraits.

Includes originals and photocopies of an article about Dendy by Adele Freedman which appeared in The Globe and Mail on Sept. 14, 1991. Additionally includes photocopy of a clipping (1988?) which appeared in The Toronto Star which focused on Dendy's career as an architectural historian.
This file also includes a photocopy of a review of Toronto Observed: Its Architecture, Patrons, and History by Dendy and Kilbourn. This appeared in Books in Canada in May 1987. Invitations to the launching event for this publication from Oxford University Press in association with Ballenford Books are also among the items included in this file.

Finally this file includes a folded flyer listing the winners of the City of Toronto Book Awards in the period 1974-1991.Lost Toronto received this award in 1979, while Toronto Observed: Its Architecture, Patrons and History received this award in 1987.The program produced for the City of Toronto's Civic Honours Day 1979 is also included in this file. City of Toronto Book awards were presented to William Dendy and other authors as part of this program.

Includes one photocopy of b&w protrait photograph of Dendy as a very young man. A second b&w portrait photograph of Dendy was taken by Hodgskiss Studios in Apr. 1976. The third b&w portrait photograph of Dendy appears in his passport, which was issued in 1981, and is also among the items included in this file.

Another photograph appears to depict students and staff in the school of architecture at Massey College, University of Toronto (1979-1980). Dendy was one of the staff members in this year and he is among the individuals in this photograph. All members in this photograph are identified in an accompanying list.

Finally, this file contains a photograph depicting a group of people who Dendy may have worked or studied with. The occasion on which this photograph was taken and the individuals in this photograph are, however, not identified.

Includes untitled loose leaf material in the form of correspondence received by Dendy over the period 1977-1991.
A considerable amount of the correspondence in this file relates to Dendy's professional employment including his teaching work at the University of Toronto, at the University of Waterloo, at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, and at the Toronto Urban Studies Centre. Other correspondence relates to walking tours of Toronto given by Dendy, as well as to Dendy's proposed exhibition "The Architecture of Forest Hill" submitted to the Department of the City Clerk of the City of Toronto in 1991. Talks, presentations, and lectures given by Dendy at various universities, at public libraries, at the Toronto Historical Board, at the Architectural Conservancy Toronto, and at other places form the subject of some of the other correspondence contained in this file. Other correspondence, much of it with Oxford University Press Canada, relates to Dendy and Kilbourn's publication of Toronto Observed and to Dendy's proposed publication of a book re the history of architecture in Canada. The awards received by Dendy over the course of his life form another theme of this correspondence. These awards include the university scholarships awarded to Dendy by the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation for his doctoral studies at Columbia University, New York, as well as his receipt of an Award of Merit from the Toronto Historical Board in 1988 for Toronto Observed. Finally, some letters relate to Dendy's activities as a member of various organisations including the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canda, the Society of Architectural Historians, and as a member of the City of Toronto Planning Advisory Committee.

Series consists of manuscripts and galley proofs prepared for publications and other research reports and papers by Dendy.
This includes a photocopy of a preliminary report, which Dendy wrote for the National Historic Sites Service in Ottawa re the 1968 Archaelogical Excavations Conducted at Fort Beausejour National Historic Park, Aulac, New Brunswick. It also includes a ts. draft of a research paper presented by Dendy entitled "The Background of Modernism in Toronto". Finally, Series consists of several sections of the galley proofs prepared for the revised and expanded edition of Lost Toronto which was published in 1993, in addition to a list of the photographs used in the first edition of this work (1978).
