Fonds consists of materials documenting William Dendy's life and career as an architectural historian including university course notes, research material for published works, research material on the history of Canadian architecture and other research interests such as Forest Hill, Hamilton, the architects Frank Darling and William Somerville, and the Massey family. Some materials relate to Dendy's teaching activities, Toronto walking tours and consultancy projects.

Also present are articles, card files, clippings, correspondence, electronic records, ephemera, manuscripts, maps, manuscript and typescript notes, as well as photographs, negatives, and approximately 40,000 slides (including more than 17,000 images of Canadian architecture, urban space, and landscape). The slides were taken by Dendy and are each individually identified by him.

Includes correspondence received by Dendy or sent by Dendy. This correspondence relates to Dendy's graduate studies at Columbia University in New York, and to Dendy's teaching work in the field of architectural history at the University of Toronto and at Carleton University in Ottawa. This correspondence also relates to research work which Dendy carried out on the Massey family and their architects.
Two titled file folders can also be found here. One contains correspondence written by Howard Moran to the Public Archives of Nova Scotia in connection with research he was conducting into the 1917 Halifax explosion. The second file includes correspondence, clippings, and other materials re the Co-Operative City Park Apartments where Dendy lived.
Other materials contained in this file include ephemera, clippings, ms. notes, and publishers' catalogues.

Videocassettes.

This series includes two videocassettes (copy 1 and copy 2). Each videocassette show the same film footage.They both include programs re the architectural history of Toronto shown on CBLT MORNING. Dendy was a regular contributor in the fields of architecture and architechtural history for CBLT MORNING between 1985-1986.

The first program (ca. 10 mins. in duration) is entitled "Lost Horizons" and focuses on the history of the development of high rise buildings in Toronto especially commercial architecture. Dendy provides extensive commentary during this program.

The second item (about 5-10 minutes in duration) forms part of a program re Wytchwood Park which also includes commentary by Dendy re the architectural history of this neighbourhood.

Consulting : Whitney Block Tower, Queens Park, Toronto.

Includes ms. holograph research notes, as well as two tss. (computer output) by Dendy relating to the Whitney Block Tower. The first ts. contains holograph corrections and takes the form of a short report on the heritage value of the Whitney Block Tower. The second ts. is a report entitled "The Archives Tower of the Whitney Block: An Historical and Architectural Appreciation". The items in this file appear to relate to work which Dendy carried out on a consultancy basis in his capacity as architectural historian.

Slides

Series consists of approximately 40,000 slides depicting architecture, urban space, and landscape in Canada and elsewhere. The total number of Canadian slides in this collection is 17,550 and the total number of American slides is 7,000. This represents sixty-one percent of the slides in the total collection. The remaining slides cover European countries (especially England), as well as Central and South America, the Far East and other places.
Eighty percent of these slides were taken by Dendy himself. The remaining slides are graphic in nature i.e. they depict plans, maps, old photographs, architectural drawings, paintings. Many of these slides have been taken from city archives and appear to be in the public domain.

Consulting : Consultant study on buildings and their relationship to Yonge Street.

Includes materials which relate to consultancy work carried out by Dendy in his capacity as architectural historian for Littlewood Hesse Architects in Toronto on a "Consultant Study on Buildings and their Relationship to Yonge Street". Items in this file include correspondence, information on Littlewood Hesse Architects, as well as ms. notes by Dendy relating to this consultant study.

The materials in this file relate to the CN Heritage Railway Station project for which Dendy acted as consulting architectural historian to the Architectural History Branch of the Canadian Parks Service. This file contains three draft tss. (computer output) of the report written by Dendy for this project as well as a photocopy of the final ts. report by Dendy. It is entitled "Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada: Railway Station Report". This file also includes maps and plans of Toronto, in addition to architectural drawings and plans of railway station buildings. Addtionally contains contact sheets featuring photographic images of railway stations in Toronto. Other materials in this file include correspondence sent by and received by Dendy re this project, in addition to some holograph ms. notes and some photography services work order forms from the National Archives of Canada and the National Library of Canada.
