Fonds consists of materials documenting William Dendy's life and career as an architectural historian including university course notes, research material for published works, research material on the history of Canadian architecture and other research interests such as Forest Hill, Hamilton, the architects Frank Darling and William Somerville, and the Massey family. Some materials relate to Dendy's teaching activities, Toronto walking tours and consultancy projects.

Also present are articles, card files, clippings, correspondence, electronic records, ephemera, manuscripts, maps, manuscript and typescript notes, as well as photographs, negatives, and approximately 40,000 slides (including more than 17,000 images of Canadian architecture, urban space, and landscape). The slides were taken by Dendy and are each individually identified by him.

University : as student and teacher.

Includes degree certificates awarded to Dendy including a Degree of Bachelor of Arts (1976) and a Master of Arts (1979) from St. John's College in the University of Cambridge. Additionally, includes a photograph which shows Dendy receiving a degree or an award at unidenfitied ceremony or event.

Another photograph appears to depict students and staff in the school of architecture at Massey College, University of Toronto (1979-1980). Dendy was one of the staff members in this year and he is among the individuals in this photograph. All members in this photograph are identified in an accompanying list.

Finally, this file contains a photograph depicting a group of people who Dendy may have worked or studied with. The occasion on which this photograph was taken and the individuals in this photograph are, however, not identified.

Series consists of correspondence received by Dendy over the period 1977-1991. Also includes some supporting documents in the form of clippings, photographs, and other items.

Consulting : Whitney Block Tower, Queens Park, Toronto.

Includes ms. holograph research notes, as well as two tss. (computer output) by Dendy relating to the Whitney Block Tower. The first ts. contains holograph corrections and takes the form of a short report on the heritage value of the Whitney Block Tower. The second ts. is a report entitled "The Archives Tower of the Whitney Block: An Historical and Architectural Appreciation". The items in this file appear to relate to work which Dendy carried out on a consultancy basis in his capacity as architectural historian.

Slides

Series consists of approximately 40,000 slides depicting architecture, urban space, and landscape in Canada and elsewhere. The total number of Canadian slides in this collection is 17,550 and the total number of American slides is 7,000. This represents sixty-one percent of the slides in the total collection. The remaining slides cover European countries (especially England), as well as Central and South America, the Far East and other places.
Eighty percent of these slides were taken by Dendy himself. The remaining slides are graphic in nature i.e. they depict plans, maps, old photographs, architectural drawings, paintings. Many of these slides have been taken from city archives and appear to be in the public domain.
